Brand new Scrambler has problem - HELP!
I finally got out on the new Scrambler for some good miles tonight. It is an '07and is brand spankin' new. The first 15-20 minutes were great, and once I get this problem fixed I'll post some of my observations.
About 20 miles into my ride I noticed that the throttle response was diminishing. The bike started to stutter a bit, and finally died as I rolled to the side of the road. I looked down and gasoline was pouring out of the tube that I assume is an overflow. I turned the petcock to off and the gas stopped leaking. After a few minutes I turned the fuel back on and gas was not coming out. I tried to start the bike and it wouldn't start. I removed the gas cap to see if I still had any gas in there. There was plenty. Hit the starter again and she fired right up.
Rode about 2 miles and the same routine happened all over again. I limped home running through this routine, pulling into the drive with gasoline pouring out of the tube.
I tried tapping on the carb bowls thinking I must have a stuck float. That didn't seem to solve the issue. My other thought is that the gas cap is somehow not venting. Before I go tearing into the float bowls, what else should I be looking for? Has anyone experienced this phenomenon before?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Julia

This may be a stupid question, but was the choke on?

I don't have first-hand experience with this, but if it works with the cap loosened, then it might be the common blocked vent in the cap. I'm not sure how that would explain gasoline coming out the vent tube though, which sounds like excessive pressure inside the tank, how would that happen?

No, choke lever was in. I follow your reasoning, though. Like the engine was flooding?
After doing a search here, it sounds like both the sticky float and the gascap vent are known issues. I am trying to avoid having to trailer the bike back to the dealer, but that may be the best course of action.

I'd first look for a float not floating...next would be a deformed float valve seat or dirt end...maybe a loose (screw in) seat...or float level setting...your description says the gas is running straight thru the shut off.
first check the hose where the gas is running out...follow it up to the carbs and see if you can determine if it's just one carb acting up or both.
that should be a warranty fix.

new problem
Check out the search feature on this one, there should be bunches of posts on it, I think the bottom line though, is through the cap on the tank and how it's tightened down.
I keep mine just barely on it fully, don't engage any of the ratchets when tightening.
Anyway, do some looking around here...you'll find your answer.

also check your oil level...if it's higher than you remember, then there may be gas in the oil...that has to come out.
a vacuum locked tank won't pour out gas...it would just refuse to co-operate.
the key point here is the gas was running out...shut the petcock and it stopped. the tank is venting fine.
90% of the answer is understanding the question.

If it's a new bike why are YOU looking for the problem?
Give it back to your dealer, it's his problem.

I agree it is their problem not yours, and if you go messing with carbs and such it might affect the warranty.
