T100 Rack/grabrail Triumph v Norman Hyde

OK today's dumb question:

Is the rack/grabrail as supplied by Triumph [appears to be made by Renntec] the same as the Norman Hyde? Anyone used one of these?

I've had a trawl through previous posts about racks but haven't found much information. I've used N Hyde stuff before and like the quality. I've also had Renntec racks etc on various Jap bikes I've owned but they always rust pretty quickly, especially around the welds.

I need to buy a rack for my T100 in addition to my tank bag and panniers to go touring - yes OK, we women always take too many clothes

As far as I can see, Triumph don't list a rack/grabrail as an accessory. Yes, Renntec make one that a lot of Triumph dealers and other aftermarket suppliers sell, but I don't believe Triumph market it as "theirs". It's certainly not on their website. The Norman Hyde one is not the same as the Renntec (and about twice the price!, some of his prices are a bit comical). I think the Renntec is wider, so you might be able to fit the kitchen sink on as well!

I've had the Renntec on my T100 for nearly 3 years, and whilst I've needed to be careful about rust forming on the two reinforcing plates underneath as the chrome is not too brilliant there, the rest of it is pretty good. If you want the Renntec, then make sure you don't pay more than the £66.50 delivered that Renntec themselves charge. For example, MotoTwin will charge you £78.90 delivered. If you're ever near Wimborne in Dorset, you could visit the factory and they'll do you a deal for used fivers!

I love the Renntec rack I have on my T100 and no rust yet after a year. But I also made the mistake of buying the Renntec backpak and that I most certainly do not like. Anyone recommand a good piece of luggage that fits the Renntec rack ???

I would repeat my warning here that I posted 'apropos of nothing' a short while ago:

I recently removed a Renntec (no sign of rust but it was on the bike when I got it, so no telling how long it had been on) from a T100 and managed to snap one of the bolts when I putting them back in - which then had to be drilled out!

I have a suspicion that, as the fixing lug on the Renntec was slightly angled out, someone had winched the bolt up hard to try and flatten it in and had stressed the bolt before I got to it - as it snapped a bit too easily when I went for a final tweak 'to make sure'!

Response here was (very wisely) to use a torque wrench when fitting/removing a rack and someone very kindly advised the setting was 27 Nm - IIRC, please check this yourself.

Trust me, there's nothing more sickening than shearing off a bolt that screws directly into the frame!

The rack was rock solid, btw - I reckon you could have hauled the bike up into the air by it!

(Should you ever get the urge to! )
