What would you pay - 2001 Bonneville?

Hi all-

I’m in the market for my first bike (as an adult) and have been searching for pre-owned Bonnevilles & Thruxtons. I found a 2001 Bonneville with lots of options, but higher mileage. What would you pay for this bike:

2001 Bonneville
Forest Green & Silver
36,000 Miles
Corbin Smuggler Seat painted to match
Factory Tach
Fly screen painted to match
Extra chrome accessories and I believe an aftermarket exhaust.

They are asking $4,500 in the Milwaukee, WI market. What do you all think?

Other Motorcycle: I wish, but with a BONNIE
Extra Motorcycle: who needs another
2001 Bonnie

I have a 2001 red Bonnie, with 27K miles, with similar options, see below, and you wouldn't get mine for 4500. Unless it's been dumped I think that is a very fair price.

You can check the classifieds on this site. You can check with kelly blue book .com they won't have options to add on so you have to do that your self. If you buy new do you still get the 1000.00 or is that over if you can you might look at a new bonneville black. Put the extra's on when you can

That sounds right. If the bike has been taken care of. Look at it real good. They can take a piece of junk & clean them up real nice. Be good to know the original owner. But the mileage shouldn't mean anything. Maybe a valve adjustment, plugs & oil change. Check the chain & sprocket. Tires of course. The brake pads don't mean anything. Plan to replace them anyway. They don't last long. Plan to put in your favorite oil. Might as well try to get the price down. Test drive test drive test drive. Good luck.

For reference only

2001 Bonneville

KBB retail is $4350, trade is $3000
NADA is $2500 to $2000.

My dealer friend said I paid too much ($3,800) for 3 year old basic bike with 7200 miles when I bought mine in 04. My friend, he is thrifty, but $4,500 seems high

I have 36,000 miles on mine so the mileage doesn't bother me though you may have more maintenance issues with that many miles. If you are not mechanically inclined then that may be more of a concern.

The accessories.... $7-800 for the seat when new, value that at $350. I am guessing $150 for the shield when new, value $75.

If you have time keep looking, but if the fever has you....it is the selling season.

Good luck

Mike

Thanks for the advice. Any critical areas we should look for if we go see it this week? It's at a dealer, so I'm sure it's been fully detailed. I doubt I'll pay the asking price, so hopefully they'll negotiate a bit.

Exclamation Look For

Chain wear - does it move side to side? Its worn. Sprockets- even slots or eluptical wear?
Signs of a drop? New forks or other things? Oil leaks? Unusual noises? Maintenance recs?
Not likely? But if so- Great!! Fork seals, swing arm wabble? Recs on valve adjustment>?
The 01's had a clutch problem that was done under warranty- done? Give it agood long ride- brakes , suspension there is to much to list. Big $$ for an older bike- wanna make sure its rite!! Getting it from a "Triumph " Dealer?? Let all know! Sounds promissing!!

The 2001s were also known for blowing oil into the airbox, you might want to see if that has been addressed.
