Problem, 1st oil change

Bought oil, fram filter and an oil filter wrench to fit the Fram filter. When I tried to remove the Triumph brand filter, the wrench did not grip and just spun. Seems Triumph designed this part to try and force owners into the dealer service dept and buy $50.00 oil (4qts) and $17.00+ filters plus pay $80.00 an hour labor charges(can anybody say ripoff). Got my parts at Cycle Stop for $35.00 total.

Any way, I carefullyy used a large monkey wrench and the Triumph filter loosened quite easily. Driving a screwdriver through the filter was problematical since I rent. Since I plan to use nothing but Fram filters from now on, no more problem.

Has anyone had a similar problem and how did they solve it?

I've never had a problem removing Triumph filters, but then that's because I bought a filter wrench to fit their filters, not the Fram filter you bought. If you go to an auto parts store (Autozone?) you'll find that they sell filter wrenches in a number of different diameters and with different numbers of flats, even for filters of the same diameter. It's got nothing to do with Triumph trying to rip you off, you just bought the wrong tool for the filters they (and numerous other bike manufacturers) use. Having said that, I've heard that Triumph have changed the filters they supply since I last bought one and that these need a different size of wrench, so I'll have to buy a new one, but then they're pretty cheap as tools go. Triumph didn't "design this part", they just buy them in from the same manufacturers that all the other bike (and car) makers use. If you buy a different fiilter in the future, you may find that the wrench that fits the Fram filter doesn't fit the new filter. Would you then say that Fram ripped you off? Why are some of you guys always so quick to assume that someone is trying to rip you off? Paranoia is a dangerous thing!!!

Wait a minute. You're doing it all wrong. Let me tell you what brand oil to use. I will tell you what filter to use. I will tell you how many miles to go between oil changes. Then 50 people will come on here telling me I am wrong.
Better yet I will just shut up. Sounds to me like you got it nailed own. So now go ride. Good luck. Bob.

The Triumph Oil filter wrench I bought Friday is actually designed to work on both filter sizes. Sorta of a two step design, the front half fits the older larger filter and back half of wrench smaller diameter to fit the new smaller filter.

I had a real hard time as well, bought the correct filter wrench and still no good. Had to do the old shade tree mechanic technique of crushing the filter enought to get some vice grips on it, worked like a charm. I won't tell you how much swearing was involved, you can probably imagine for yourself.

This is easily avoided by installing the filter from newbonneville with your next oil change. It has a socket nut on the top so you can easily get it off with a wrench. I will never go back to sticking the screw driver through the filter ever again.

Thumbs up Filter Change

Just did mine yesterday. I use NAPA Gold 1358 since new. The same as Triumph filter looking @ it- size wise? If the universal filter wrench wont do it- in commeth the large water pump pliers! My buds universal wrench did it & all is done. I posted about oil change & amount. Gave me a chance to test what I have been saying. Been a year since the last( which now will change) 1 before summer & 1 after- in Fla hot hot hot in summer now !The oil looked pretty bad, but still worked. The post said drain what will come out & dump (quickly) in 4 Qts. It still works rite on! I dont wait for the last drop- just a quick dump. Then drain the residual into 1 bottle. Rite on level & a litle left over should it ever need a little add NOT!!! NAPA gold filters have done me rite. Hell the cop bikes all use them here & I get their discount, so they cant be that bad- made by WIC. Get some big water pump pliers & all will be well? Some times the filter comes rite off & other times NOT! The new filter is supposed to look good on- the old one like who cares? Just do what you gotta do to get it off? The old girl sure LOVES new oil!! I guess now she'll get it 2x per year instead of 1! Summer temps do it here!! Cant believe my bud still uses Dino in his Honda? Changes it every 2000 mi, & water cooled so its not that bad? Got 38000 mi on an 03 - cant argue w/ success I guess?

To remove the old filter, big channel lock pliers will fit any size. You put them on by hand, so no need to even buy a special wrench.
