The starter solenoid is located behind the left side cover.
It will have 2 big wires and 2 smaller wires connected to it.
The 2 big wires come directly from the battery and goes directly to the starter.
If you have the ignition on and you jump the 2 big wires that will send
power directly to the starter and turn the starter.
If you hear the same noise and she is not turning the motor
then the starter is not engaging for some season.
It could be the starter if self or it could be in the starter gears inside the
clutch cover. Like Mike mentioned hope it is not the starter gear shaft.
Jump the solenoid and see what happens.

Bill

Just make sure you are in neutral since jumpering the solenoid bypasses all the safeties.

Have you tried bump starting the bike? Coast down a hill with the ignition on (and choke pulled since the bike is cold) and letting out the clutch in 2nd gear. The bike ought to start if the only problem is the starter electrics. If the wheel skids and the motor won't turn, well that would be a bad sign.

And if it doesn't start then push it back up the hill.

Push starting didn't work so I had the dealer send a truck. It turns out that the mounts for the shaft that holds the idle gear split on both ends. The bad news is that the entire engine needs to be rebuilt and a computer has to be replaced. The good news is that my warranty is good through July so everything is covered. The not so good news is that it will take a month to fix. I could have been worse.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

I'm glad that it worked out for you, meaning still under warranty. This has happened to several people.

And more than several people are beginning to get concerned???

Unlike most other failure modes, how do you prevent this?????

sorry i was right on this one but glad they will cover it.If the starter motor runs on these bikes its got to be that shaft or the starter clutch on the crank .All the starter is is a motor no drive on it like a car just a gear made on the end of the starter motor shaft.
The drive is the starter clutch on the crank it locks up and turns crank will free wheel turned the other way that shaft that broke holds a idler gear that gears the starter motor to the starter clutch
