I drew some gauge brackets

I'm about to have gauges on my bike again! I got a mini-tach a la D9/Seth, and a bicycle speedo that I think will make for a really clean look. I was inspired by this Davida pic, if you can make it past the hot chick you'll see what I'm talking about:

I'm no draftsman by any means, but I have AutoCAD at home and I drew three scenarios up to scale. The cool thing about it is, I can print them on paper, cut them out, and stick them on the bike to see how it will look. My speedo will be mounted on the clip on handlebar like the bike above, but I need a bracket for my tach. The last design incorporates an oil pressure gauge, but it could be changed for a a/f ratio gauge, or whatever.

Thoughts? (by the way, this will not print to scale, I plotted it at 1:2 scale to fit the gauges all on one page but photobucket may have resized it)

The bracket will be mounted on top of the top clamp, here's a pic:

Bracketology

Jeff,

Good ideas... and tough choices... could make any of these work!

I'm an obsessive believer in paper & cardboard mockups... got quite a stack sitting right here by the keyboard...

Which one looks like it was meant to be there? That's the one...

Gotta stare at these for awhile - not what I expected to see, but I like
'em all...

Cheers,

D9

Seth, what size rough opening do you make for the mini-tach? I know you use some rubber grommet type thing for them.

thanks

Jeff,

On the Generation II mini gauge brackets, I use an opening of +/-2.5" OD - plate material is +/- .25" 6061... I make my own gaskets using 1/16" neoprene... the neoprene wraps around the gauge where it seats in the bracket... then I use an O-ring on top of the 1/16" rubber gasket... the O-ring seats against the bottom of the gauge bezel... the edges of the bracket are drilled & tapped for two set screws per gauge... those set screws clamp against the neoprene gasket keeping the gauge from rotating...and custom cups clamp the whole show together...

On Generation I brackets, same 2.5" OD opening, but the alminum is .125" 6061... also uses a hand made gasket, but the gasket is just a section of neoprene U-channel... much simpler & you see more gasket...

Cheers,

D9

I redrew it with a 2.5" opening, and the area around it was reduced to .25" instead of .5" as I had it before. After printing out a full-scale size, .5" just seemed too big. Here's the revised drawing with some dim's on it:

Jeff - looks good!

Question... you planning on using the stock Bonnie ignition?

Nope, that's the one I usually use

Here's a drawing of the ignition with some basic dimensions...
fit this into the bracket where you want it... then you're one more step on the
way to cutting metal...

FYI the main shaft of the ignition tapers from about 1.29" at the bottom to
about 1.18" at the top...

email me if you need a DXF

What about the view to the idiot lights in the headlamp - good to go?

Cheers,

D9

Thanks Seth, that will help. I'm going to cut one of these brackets out of thick card stock or posterboard (whatever I can find in the house....) and see how it all lines up.

Been thinking about working one of these in somewhere:

but I can't find any dimensions on them. I'm thinking it's gotta be close to the same size as the tach, and it's pretty cheap.
