Hey was just wondering how hard is it to take the wheels off because i want to get them powder coated. Does any one have this done to their bike?

Not hard to take the wheels off. Got a lift? Hint: If you take both off, take the rear wheel off first and re-install it last.

And you'd better line up someone to re-lace them properly and re-install the tires.

I'm in the process of having my wheels painted. Yes, wheels....not just the rims. I'm talking rims, hubs and spokes.

I just removed them from the bike and got the old tires and tubes off and prepped them for my Dad to work his magic on them.

Here is my inspiration:

One question though ? Why take the rear off first and install it last ? I'm confused.

I am curious about the painting of the entire wheel.

I assume that they are going to be painted while assembled. what if adjustments need to be made to the spokes, etc? Is a special type of paint/prep needed? If the entire wheel can be painted, could it also be powdercoated while assembled?

As far as adjusting the spokes etc.. while painted, I will just apply some touch up paint to the spoke if the wrench mars it. As far as prep. I am having by Dad lightly sandblast the entire wheel to rough it up a bit. Then I bought some acid etching primer and black wheel paint. He runs a body shop so he will do all the painting etc..

As far as powdercoating it, they use a high heat to cure the powder. I think you would need remove the bearings before powdercoating.

well i i just plan to do the rim not the entire wheel. Found a shop around here that is suppose to be pretty good and they are not too expensive. Another question is where can i get a decent bike jack not costing me an arm and a leg.

Harbor Freight has a great lift. It is often on sale down from $72 or so to $59.

Rear wheel off first and on last because the bike is back-heavy when it is on the lift. If you remove the front wheel first, the whole business will tip back and you'd better move fast to catch it.

If you just need to remove the front wheel, jack it up high enough to put something under the back wheel, a cinderblock, piece of wood, etc, then let it down so the back wheel just touches that support.
