Life span of a rear tire
Saturday I had to replace the rear tire on my Speedmaster due to a sudden case of "nail in rubber" disease. Now, the tire had 6700 miles on it when it was replaced. And since I'm riding to phoenix in may I was going to replace it anyway, but it had alot of wear. I maybe could have gotten another 1500-2000 miles out of it. That is little less than average for me. (the Pirellis I usually get last between 9000-11000 miles).
I ride hard and go through 2 rear tires and 1 front tire a year. How much life do you guys get out of your rear tires? Or is it just me eating 'em up?

5-6K on the rear tires for me. I may try the Metzelers next, since they're reputed to have good road grip + good mileage. Cost is somewhat more than the Dunlops I currently run.
BTW - don't let that 'I think there's enough rubber left for the 1500 mile trip' keep you from changing before a trip. Once the tire is worn down, it seems like that last bit of tread goes more quickly than you thought it would. (Murphy's Law thing).
I believe a lot of the differences we see in tire wear may have to do with the type roads we ride. Here in Ohio, many of our better riding roads have 'chipped and sealed' surfaces. The result is a very abrasive road surface that has to take its toll in tire wear.
Bob

Yep. Did that 2 years ago. Got home from a weekend trip riding on steel cord. Scary.
Pirelli radial on Burgman 650. Looked good for another 1000 miles when I left home. Looked like this when I got back.

Tire life depends on the tire, the pressure you run, the roads you use and your riding style/habits. The life of a tire therefore is different from one bike to the next.

I have 5200 on the original Bridgestone Battlax rear tire. It is nearly down to the wear bars. I just ordered a new tire and expect to replace it at about 6000 miles. Next change, I think I am going to put Tourance tires on front and rear. I have always gotten about twice the mileage out of the front as the rear. However, I use engine braking a lot and rarely brake heavily with the brakes, but I accelerate fairly heavily.

Where exactly are the "wear bars" on the stock tires? I always looked for them but could never find them...Maybe I wore right through them?? I got 8800 miles out of my original rear tire.

Look on the sidewall of the tire. You will find a triangle shaped mark. It is pointing to the wear bar which is just a shallower part of the groove in the very center of the tire.

Paul, that is really scary looking. Guess you just had to ride in zig-zag fashion, and never in a straight line.
