Question 2008 Bafflectomy

I know this subject has been covered completely in previous posts. I only have one question, has Triumph changed the mufflers on the 2008 Bonneville and what procedures need to be altered (if any) to perform this life saving surgery.

Good question. I don't know about the current models but after '05 several of the guys said that they couldn't get the recommended drill bit into the exhaust hole, which was a bit smaller than a lot of the threads recommended, so I'd be sure that whatever drill you buy will fit in there before you start.

I'll be interested in hearing from anyone who has tried it on the narrower exhaust opening.

Grumpy - IMHO don't bother with the bafflectomy, just go get a new set of open pipes.

I started with the first stage bafflectomy, ok it sounds better than stock, but wasn't quite loud enough. I then drilled the next baffle, then the next and then the next, which produced a lovely sound, but still wasn't enough.

Now I have Emgo shorties, and my bike now sounds like it should - absolutely wonderful

But if you wish to 'go your own way' here's a couple of pics of what's inside an older stock muffler

my bafflectomy

I did a bafflectomy on a late 2007 Bonnie, so would imagine it to be the same as a 2008.

first of all I used an 1-1/4" hole saw and drilled through the restrictor located on the end of the muffler as shown on the previous thread sketch.

then I pushed the restrictor back in the muffler about 1/2" to enable a rotary file or Dremel to remove the remaining sawn metal still welded to the inside of the muffler end.

once this metal is removed and the muffler bore is smooth, grab the restrictor with a pair of vice grips and yank out the restrictor. will come out as an assembly about 6" long.

then you can drill out the muffler end plates as described in other threads.

I found that by drilling out one end plate the noise sounds nice and deep but not too loud. similar to older Bonnies I've owned, and I like it.

certainly a lot cheaper than buying after market mufflers.

went on a run Sunday morning with a group of British Bike enthusiasts and one guy there had a black Bonnie with Norman Hyde mufflers. Too me there wasnt much difference in noise between his and mine el cheapo modded pipes.

(then again with about 50 bikes starting up at once it was hard to tell)

Do it The easy way

Yes they are different. Most are doing as i did- cut the last 2" off & pull the guts out. Then reaching the other restrictor plates is easier!! Looks better INMO & others as well & is a hell of a lot easier!! Good luck!! They do sound sweet after all is said & done!!

I Also have a 2008 Bonnie and I Took my Silencers off and got a set of take offs from ebay that were from a 2005. This was my way or not dealing with the hard to get at Baffles on the 08's. I paid $50 shipped for my 05's
The were clean with no dents....

After I Got them. I wrapped the ends in Masking tape , I then Wrapped the main body in a towel and set them in a chop saw. I Cut the last 1" of the tip off and just pulled the rest of the last baffle out. I deburred the end and painted the inside and 1/8" around the outside with high temp silver paint.

It Came out great and took maybe 15 minutes to do.

I Then Carefully packed my 2008 mufflers in a box and packed them away for when I Restore the bike in 30 years...........

when making the cut, could I cut just through the outer pipe, leaving the baffle connected to the end to be discarded, then using a visegrip or pipe wrench, twist out the baffle?

Thanks for the reply. Got a hitch in my giddyup right now but, as soon as I can stand up straight up again, cut, cut, cut
