I use Amsoil filters AND OIL! Does anyone what to talk about oil?

hand tight on an oil filter is bogus advise
there are no two people who will do it the same twice, and on this very board there are complaints about the filter coming loose, no really. the only way to tighten these things right is with a tool of some sort wrench or pliers your choice, but use a tool, you cannot do it by hand the way it sits on this bike.
I actually safety wire my plug and filter, just in case. It is required on any track, and a good idea it can prevent a big mess.

I've never seen oil filter instructions that specify a torque setting. Every filter I've ever bought and every instruction I've ever read say the same thing. My automobile mechanic, who is very good and very experienced and has 28 motorcycles (really!), does not use torque wrenches on oil filters.
The one time I used a torque wrench (with a K&N filter), I discovered that I hand-tighten it tighter than the torque setting. Maybe I'm heavy-handed.
On the other hand, there's no harm in using the torque wrench on the oil filter, so if you feel that it's beneficial, that's fine. To me, it's overkill.

torque talk
The triumph filters have instructions printed on the shrink wrapping to torque to 10 - 12 nm. That's just about hand tight. But although the old sweats eschew the use of torque wrenches for everything, I can't help thinking it's good to get it right. If you were going up on the space shuttle, would you like to see a technician "hand tightening" the hatch shut, or using a torque wrench?
I phoned the parts dept today about my filter. The lady said that I must have been sold an old one off a shelf somewhere (although she obviously thought I was lying for some reason, because she said "I don't doubt what you're telling me, sir... I'm not saying you're lying.")
Anyway, they said they would lend me the old tool to take the filter off, when the time came. Every single thing they do just reinforces the fact that I shouldn't let them within 200 feet of my motorcycle.

Keeping them tight
I do not know the number, the magic torque number for the oil filter, suzuki has a nice approach, spin it on till the o ring makes contact and then tighten TWO full turns, they use a special fine thread for their filters, and let me tell you that is very tight. and you have to have a wrench for them.
to be honest 10-12nm seems low to me, mine are probably twice as tight. I never bother to torque the oil filter either but i use a 1/4" drive socket so that short handle is somewhat self limiting. I do usually torque the drain plug as I really do not want to have to heli-coil it someday, it has real fine threads which are a real bad idea in aluminum, not sure why most bike makers use fine threads, for a plug that will be removed that much, unless it is to help with vibration induced loosening.
get fresh crush washers from the auto stores usually $0.15 vs the trumpy part at $2.00
