Side panels don't fit

After installing my Keihin 39 mm FCR carbs with the new intake manifolds I cannot get the side panels over the K&N air cleaners. Nobody who sells these mentions this-I even swapped the K&N filters side to side (they are offset) to no avail. Now what ??
Guess it is time for the Dremel (and the sawzall) to cut the things up so they will go on.
anyone got the answer to this one? got an easy way or do you have to cut and fit??

Also-the Pingel hi-flow fuel valve will not clear the throttle mechanism of the new carbs-it will fit between the two cables but you have to angle it to the front about 45 degrees and you lose the on/reserve function. Nice. Guess nothing fits nothing as usual.

They do run like stink though!! got the idle down to about 1100 even and they pull cleanly all the way to 8,000 + on thetach.(ProComm box)

Maybe I will put some velocity stacks on her and run w/o air claeaners?

I vote no to velocity stacks, airfilters are a good thing imho.

A dremel is a lot better to work with on the side covers than a sawzall. Kinda like driving tack nails with a sledge hammer w/ the sawzall. You could even blue-tape and mark the covers, then drill some small pilot/guide holes along the mark then dremel/cut off wheel.

I used blue tape, a sharpie, and a dremel. You can always do a cut like mine:

Or you can just trim the part that's hitting the filter. You get more air my way

Hivel
There are some other aftermarket pod filters out there that may work
with the side covers I can't think of the name of them I think Rodburner
has them on his bike.
I can't believe they would sell a carb kit that don't fit with the stock side covers.
New Bonnie and Bella corse both say they bolt right on.
They don't say any thing about modifying the side covers.
Bill
I just looked on New bonnie and they have the UNI pod filters for $35 bucks
They may work , take a look.

I had the same problem (side covers not fitting) after installing the BC intake manifolds and the round K&Ns on the stock carbs. Left a message on the BC voicemail, but no answer nearly a week later....

the reason they don't fit is because the new intake manifolds are shorter than your old intake manifolds with the black plastic spacer. See if you can fit the spacer in between the head and intake manifold like on the stock setup and it will probably allow the side covers to fit. I just realized you have an 865cc bike and all the 865cc's have the spacers, the 790s don't.

Hey, Sweat--I originally had the spacers on with the new intakes, but called BC about whether to include them (no instructions and no shorter bolts included with the manifolds) and whoever I talked to there said not to. So I pulled them off. Wonder what the spacer would do to the performance, if anything?

a longer intake tract typically will produce better low-mid RPM power and a shorter intake tract better mid-high rpm power.

the 865s have cams more aimed at (allegedly) more midrange power and have the spacers, the 790s were more mid-high range performers and had the shorter intake tract.

Hmmm.... with the weather I haven't been able to get her out for a real ride since the NARK and rejet--just an extended around-the-blocker. I want to get it dynoed ASAP, but the midrange response did feel flatter than I was expecting--but I do need to get it out before I can reach any real conclusions. Thanks for the info. I may be buying a Dremel.....
