Ya gotta go with what's right for you, but I think riding upright with forward controls is hard on the body. The shock of all the bumps goes straight up your spine. I wonder how many cruiser types are on first name basis with a chiropractor.

Funny you guys all like the mid pegs. Us harley guys use tall bars and forwards to "relieve" upper back issues, not cause them! But you guys are certianly right about trying the bike out first. Thats just good advice. The dealers I called all have bikes in stock and will let you test ride. I see Triumph upped the displacement recently. I have been looking at both new and used bikes. Quite a few good deals on used. But I want to ask... is the bennifits of the bigger motor all that signifigant. Of course the dealers tell me its a must, but they want to sell new bikes. But one dealer in Chicago has brand spankin' new '05's for thousands off list. Would I be giving up alot with the older, smaller displacement motor? Are there any other differences.

score a used bonnie.....790 motor...from a '01 to a '03. They have the best cams in them...( longest duration )...newer 790 motors are runners as well, and the cam timing is still more desireable than the 865 bonnies.
You can tell the 790 motors from the 865's by the black spacer between the intake manifold and the head, 865's have them...790's do not.
As for forwards...I dunno where you are but check these guys out...they make forwards for new bonnies.
http://www.choppahead.com/set.html?index.html
Use the contact link to get in touch with them...they dont offer them on the site but they have made them for custom hinkleys they have built.

Neil - The standard riding position is exactly the reason I was drawn to the new Bonnevilles. I grew up riding dirt bikes, then CB Hondas on the street. Like many of us here, I recently got back into motorcycles. I tried a couple of bikes with forward controls and just didn't feel stable on them. Cruising down the highway wasn't bad, but I still preferred to have my feet and legs straight under my body to help absorb the bumps. Mostly when I was stopping, starting, and low speed maneuvering I just felt like I had less control compared to mid pegs. I understand that you prefer what you're accustomed to... everybody does. But I guess my suggestion would be to give the mid pegs a chance before making those forward controls. Welcome to the forum, BTW.

Yep.
790 '02-03 is the way to go.
The cams are the prize at the bottom of the box. Let them have the extra 75cc. They'll need it.
If you can get a "new" 05 790 for thousands off the list price then do it. Quickly. Spring is coming and somebody is going to jump all over that deal.
I have a '05 790. +20K canyon miles. Zero problems. So, yea, I like em.

Well, I was thinking used, but this looks like quite a deal. I didn't want to spend over 5K but I might go look at these if anyone ever buys my bike.

I am a cheap S.O.B. and I will find the right bike. Just playing the window shopper right now. I just got married so spare money is tight.

WOW!!! 6 grand for a new one seems like a steal! I think I'd jump on that deal... ASAP.

Neil,
I'd jump all over 6K for that new bonnie too. As for the riding position, give a stock one a try for a while. My last bike was a Yam. V-Star with mustang seat, floorboard with forward controls. I had back surgery and the star would kill my back after more than 45 min. in the saddle. I have done 5-6hr. rides on the bonnie with no pain. I think the upright position and feet under me for support really takes the pressure off my back. This is just a personal preference, if you want to modify a bonnie then join the club and "Make it your own".

I have been thinking about it, but like I said, I am stuck on two fronts. First, I need to sell my Shovel to pay for it, and second, I am not yet sold on the Black. I may be willing to hold out for a slightly used T-100 and wind up with the bike I really want as opposed to getting the Black just 'cause its a great buy. I have to convince myself what it is I really want, and that will probably not happen till I have a pile of cash in my hand and I'm sitting on a bike.....sigh
That why I am visiting you guys. You represent the largest wealth of Triumph information on the net, and can answer all my "would be/could be" questions till it happens. But just wait till I get one. Then I get real annoying with the questions!!!

Actually the '01's are the only models with the hot cams. They were changed in '02. There was a discussion on cams not too long ago.
