Yep the original Sportster was made to counteract the British invasion of the late 50's, it even came with a right hand shift, so quite a bit of history there.
I ran my T-bird against a friends 1200 Sporty quite a few times and was suprised that it kept up until third gear then I left him, the Sporty couldn't keep up at all with my old 1974 Trident but Sporty's (1200) are good running bikes and I wouldn't take anything away from them.
