preload adjustment

is there a specific kind of spanner wrench i need to get to adjust preload on my shocks? is it the same tool for all shocks? do i just have my head up my arse and a spanner wrench is the wrong thing to use altogether?

The spanner is sort of a hook shape and is maybe not an exact match for every shock but should be usable between most brands.

This link to a google image search should explain quite a bit.
You could also make your own tool without too much trouble, or modify another tool. If you're worried about scratching up the shock use a rag.
I've used all kinds of things in a pinch.

With the stock shocks on my '07 T100 a hex key wrench works fine. Just find one that fits the hole in that silly adjuster thingy. I can't remember the size of the one I used.

When/if you buy a good set of aftermarket shocks, they should come with a tool that fits their own adjustment mechanism. Meanwhile, the hex key wrench is a decent no cost solution for the stockers.

A screwdriver or bar that's 6mm diameter or a bit less will do the job. No need for any 'special' tools.

ZRX's probably come with the tool required, do you have any mates with a ZRX? They look to me like they need what we call a "C-spanner", but you guys in the US probably have a completely different name for them! The sort of thing you would use to tighten the ring on the bottom bracket of a pedal cycle.
