I'm not entirely sure what this thread is responding to specifically, but I get the gist. I guess some people have been feeling over-censored and complained.
My penny's worth is that I generally think this site is good. I started off thinking it was a brilliant discovery and the cameraderie that I sometimes felt was a thrill. Then I discovered 'moderation'. I've been 'moderated' twice as I recall and it wasn't nice. The first was in reference to being sardonic and deliberately using the 'F-word' but in disguised form using ***** etc (
http://www.triumphrat.net/triumph-tw...triumph-7.html). Apparently that wasn't acceptable and I was threatened with 'an infraction' (to which I almost had a pulmonary infarction). I felt like I was a kid in school being wrapped over the knuckles with a ruler.
The second was when I responded to a post whereby the discussion became very interesting for a lot of contributors (
http://www.triumphrat.net/biker-hang...-off-brit.html). I - again in partial jest - made some general comments about the financial and political climate in the UK (as any members of a democracy do when they get together). I was then 'moderated' once again - insighting a riot or some such evil - and the post was then closed.
I think the word 'moderation' is inappropriate in terms of both these responses. I think the words 'censorship' and 'totalitarianism' would be more apt and perhaps reflects the fear-driven, political responses to 'terror' that has the world scrutinising every sideways look these days. The experience has taken the joy and freedom out of contributing to this site and I think the degree of censorship doesn't reflect a contemporary or democratic discourse, particularly within the motorcycling community known for its appreciation of freedom from conformity.
I think this is a valuable site and a testament to its creators' generosity in time and effort as well as the many contributors who create a sense of community, albeit via a computer. I'll keep coming back - perhaps not as frequently now - but would prefer to see the censorship toned down to reflect common sense and in respect of the joys, hopes, frustrations and humour that exists in everyday conversation between people who love motorcyling.
All the best,
