Speedo problems

Hello, My '05 T100 speedometer has read to fast since day one. I estimate aroung 10% fast. I put up with it so far, however not another problem has developed. Below 40 degrees F it starts an awful schreeching and the needle reads really fast and is unsteady. (lots of us have experienced this on old worn out mechanical speedos) What I'm looking for is a good speedo shop that can calibrate the unit and address the schreeching as well. Anybody have a similar problem and/or know a good shop?

Speedo

Triumph speedo's SUCK. They are a questimate @best! If you got a tach- no problem. If not- maybe an after market one?? I can tell by thge gear I am in & how hard the engine strugles to 50 mph. After that its a guess! I guessI will keep on "guessing?" Got no tach.

I had the screeching sound on my new 07. Pulled the speedo cable from the hub, greased the cable real good with assembly lube and (the important part) re-routed the cable so it doesn't go thru the front brake (upper) cable loop and only goes thru the lower loop. Cured it.

Thanks Guys, Yes I have a tac and really use it more than the speedo. In the "old days" Triumph shop manuals gave you a RPM/10MPH figure. Really convenient for knowing what you should be tacking at ten MPH increments. And, as long as the tack and speedo agreed with the spec you knew both meters were correct. My new factory shop manual does not have that nice bit of info. I have estimated 3K is 50 MPH and 6K would be 100 MPH. Anybody know what the actual figure is?

The speedometer & tach relation is different depending on what front (and/or rear) sprocket you are running. Get a GPS & use that to figure out your rpm at 40-60 etc. Lube the cable anyway.

speedo problems

Went on a 220 mile round trip today , it was a bit nippy (60 f). I was going 80-85 most of the way, or so I thought. This would explain why the cop I saw didn't bother with me. One way to check accuracy, is to count "one one thousand, two one thousand" and so on between mile markers at 60 mph. It'll give you a ball park est. anyway.

the bikes revs compared to speedometer readings will vary between bikes ,because we are not all running the same countershaft sprocketes.
maybe even tyre changes on the front wheel will have a slight impact if if you increase or decrease the ouside diameter of the wheel when you move away from the stock tyre dimensions.

Speedo problems

Once again thanks for the input.
My '05 T100 is unmodified as far as the final drive goes, which according to the manual should be 18/43 sprockets and I'm running the same Metzlers that came on the bike. I live at 8,000 ft. in the rockies and it's too **** cold out there to confirm this. But I have no reason to believe it is not correct.
This gearing is just fine for pulling the twisty canyons with their steep grades. But on road trips taller gearing would be nice. How do people like the 19 front sprocket on the highway? Do you feel any significant loss of acceleration. Given the torque spec of the 865 motor I would think do just fine.

Torque spec I found on the web shows the 865 is about the same as the 790 at the lowto mid range. But it is quite unusual in that after the low to mid range it just continues to gradually climb to 6K.

RiderPaul,
I put the 19T on my o7 bonnies and I luv it. Went on a little 260 mi ironbutt ride and it cruzed allong just great with the Tigers and R3 at 70-75. Even popped it up to a ton once and still felt like it was ready to go. I'm not a crotch rocket kind of guy that needs to pull the front wheel in 3 gears. I found that it gave me loooong smoooth gears and good acceleration. One other plus, I got 54MPG on 2 tanks on that trip and am averaging 47 round town. I commute to town on a dark twisty 12 miles. I get stuck behind cars right at 46mph, which seemed to slow for 5th and a little revvy for 4th at a steady cruze. The 19T lets me stay in 4th comfortably until 55 or 60.
That's is all I got.
