Bike Broke down (Cant get started)

I was coming home from work ths afternoon on my 2003 Speedmaster had travelled about 10 Kms .
Iwas going up a hil It was raining and the Bike had been sitting in Drizzle all morning. all of a sudden it just Quit (Nearly got cleaned up by a car)

After walking and calling for help (about 1/2 hour ) I tried her again .She started but as soon as I raised the side stand she would run for a few seconds and stop .Once I travelled about 100 mtrs before stopping.
I could start her with the stand down but not up . Ihave her home in the shed now all cleaned up but she will not start at all wont even kick.
Do you think it could be the stand switch .Itried direct wiring the switch but it still wont start!!
Thankyou in advance

This sounds like a vacuum problem , have you tried taking of the fuel cap , if not try it , it could be the breather line from the tank , they can get blocked up

Will it crank if you loosen the fuel cap? That would tell you if the lower end of the vent tube is blocked by debris. Cutting the end at an angle facing the rear tire has been reported to be a cure for that. Did you disconnect the side stand switch to eliminate it completely? That's also a source of wet riding failures, some of the guys have coated theirs with silicon to waterproof them. Might be a time to revisit dielectric grease on the exposed connections at the front of the coils as well....

A friend has an 03 Speedmaster and he had exactly the same thing happen to his. I met him on New Years Eve to go to a biker meet. We got about a mile from his house and his bike just died. No misfiring or spluttering etc, just dead as if the ignition had been turned off.

We pushed it onto a garage forecourt and with him sat on it attempted to start it. It wasn't playing at all. I asked him if he'd done any work on it lately. He had changed the plugs and had the tank off so I was guessing he'd disturbed something under the tank.

I whipped out the right side plug and checked for a spark with him sat on the bike. Nothing.

I whipped out the left side plug but by now he had put the side stand down. It fired on one cylinder and the one I had out was sparking like a goodun. We had just raised the tank to see if anything was amiss so i'm now guessing a loose wire or something.

So, with everything looking in order we reseat the tank and start her up. Running like a dream and jobs a goodun.

Side stand up, she cuts out again!

So side stand down and she runs fine. We triple check this by gently raising the side stand with the bike running. Sure enough she keeps cutting out. My money is now on a knackered side stand switch. Luckily his local mechanic is open on New Years eve. So we drop the keys to him and head off to our meet with him as pillion.

Mechanic comfirms that the side stand switch is at fault so orders a new one which arrives in a few days.

My mate collects his bike, starts up, and rides about 200 yards until the same thing happens all over again.

Back to the mechanic who now diagnoses a knackered ECU (igniter box, call it what you will) It has now been sent off for testing. As yet i haven't heard from my mate so I don't know the latest.

I will text him though and find out.

I found reference to this problem on one other Americam site concerning the Triumph America which is the same bike isn't it?

Anyone else know of this and how much is it for a new ecu?

Hope you get it sorted mate

Just been on the phone to my mate.

The ECU is shot and a new one has been ordered. He thinks it's gonna be about £320 for a new one but i'll update you as soon as I know more.

The day that his ECU arrived back (knackered) with his mechanic a lady rode in on a Speedmaster for a service (the bike, not the lady) The mechanic swapped ECU's and sure enough my mates bike was running as it should.

Good luck.

Are you sitting down

About $560-$600 usd, procoms are half the price but about half as good, but I do not think they make a ecu for the 270 degree motor. If they do have one at least they warranty their parts, and seem to replace them when they do not work. sorry I was writing this while he was posting, but with the exchange rates it is probably cheaper to buy here and have it shipped even from bike bandits!

It pays to check out http://stores.ebay.com/PinWall-Cycle-Parts-Inc as they routinely part out Triumphs. Also, I'd be tempted to inspect the sensor coil gap just in case that's what caused the initial failure, as was the case on my America.

Thanks for the reply Oldroadie and thanks for the link to that site. I've been looking for an ecu on e-bay for him but with no luck. I haven't been looking worldwide though - only the u.k. - They have this ecu for sale http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Trium...8706QQtcZphoto

Do you think it will fit my friends 03 Speedmaster? Sorry, I have no clue about triumphs at the moment.

They also have lots of stuff for my GPZ900R and one or two bits for my CBR1000F so i'll add em to my favourites.

Also, when you say the pulser gap caused a failure on yours do you mean they actually caused the igniter to fail? Or they were themselves to blame for the problem?

Many thanks for your help.

Glad he's got it fixed, but, boy, that is a steep price to pay!
