Anyone powdercoated the gas tank?

Just wondered if anyone has actually done this. I am considering this to an alternative to a expensive paint job. I have talked to a couple of different coating places.

One guy told me he doesn't do tanks because it will ruin them. He claims that some of the tanks in general are put together with silver solder inside and that baking them will cause it to melt and thus ruin the tank inside.

Has anyone heard of this before? Or does anyone know how our gas tanks are put together inside?

Not true. Powdercoat-away. In fact my powdercoater chemically stripped the tank to see if there was any filler or solder. You will not get a very smooth glassy look like traditional paint. I used a slightly textured look which feels like 600 grit sandpaper.

This is wrong. Powder coating is cured at 400*f, silver solder is well above that.
Powder coating is actually pretty easy to do. They even sell kits. The hard part is building the cureing box. Most people (non pros) use elements from electric stoves. (No open flames)

and just so you know, you CAN get a gloss finish with powder coating. They also have transparent and textured finishes.

Here is a link to a VERY BASIC "how to" coat.http://www.alternatorparts.com/how_to_powder_coat.htm

"Rosey's" offers about 200 different colors.

I have powder coated a tank and other stuff.

Here's a better link for Rosey's: http://roseyspowdercoating.biz/osCom...x.php?cPath=32

That "Xtreme Chrome" would make it look a lot like the old chromed BSA tanks.

powder coat is ok in some aplications but if you want a top class gloss finish with real depth its no where near as good as two pak, I use the debeer brand ,powder coating has its uses as it is very tough but the surface finish is poor compared to the top shelf gear. this is not just my opinion any pro worth his salt will know this..

This is very true....a good quality paint job will always look better than a powder coat. But for a guy like me with 2 kids and one on the way, and a wife that doesn't exactly see the need for customizing my motorcycle......powder coating is a much more cost effective way for me to get the color I want.

You guys put a bug in my ear as I am planning on painting my bike.

What is a fair price for a decent paint job for tank and fenders?

Im sort of in the same boat...my godson already dropped two torx bits on my tank...and riding on souther california freeways...ive gotten my far share of paint chips. powercoating looks like a better alt to paint.

I looked into this a while back and was quoted around $200 to get the tanks stripped and pc'd.
