How do you get to the airfilter

Bonneville T100 2007
Sorry if this seems a stupid question But I have searched on here looked in the handbook etc I have had the side panels off and nothing seems obvious. I have the Haynes manual on it's way to me in the mail but I want to change the Air Filter to a KN before Saturday as the dealer owes me a carb tune and I don't want him to forget it
many thanks for your advice
Steve

Hi Steve - You take off the left side cover and pull out the "snorkel" (it's the rubber, elephant trunk looking thing facing forward). Yank that out to expose the air filter. The filter is held on with three screws behind a plastic retaining ring. Once that's gone, simply pull out the filter.

Tha Haynes manual will help a ton with stuff like this.

Take off the left side cover. You will see a hollow plastic piece about 5 inches long, 3 inches wide and 1.5 inches deep. It points toward the front of the bike and is the snorkel. Part of it extends with a tube about three inches into the center of you air filter. Grab it and pull it straight out. You will then see your air filter.

Next, there is a cover with three screws holding it on to your airbox. take them out, pull the cover off, pull the stock filter out, put the K&N in, put the cover back on, tighten screws and you are done.

There is a debate on putting the snorkel back in. Some will say never, others will say it is needed for the acoustics of the box. If you don't want to put it back on, you might consider adding a bellmouth to the air intake. A cheap solution is to buy a Polaris Plenium for ten bucks, cut it in half, shove one in the hole. A very cheap and easy mod.

The only point to be mindful of when removing the filter is that some can be a slight interference fit with respect to the adjacent frame member and if care is not taken the cheese grater metal casing around the filter can easily scratch the frame downtube.

It will pay to wrap a couple of turns of duct tape or similar around the frame to protect it as the filter comes out.

I found that by see-sawing the filter in and out a few times that enough plastic was scraped away inside the airbox cavity to allow the filter to tilt slightly and be easily removed.
Remember to wipe up any plastic shavings inside the cavity if you do this though.

Definite +1 to what Woolly says about removing/inserting the filter. You will scratch the frame. You can use tape or hold a piece of cardboard there while you maneuver the filter.

I think there is a special Triumph workshop tool to help with this task - so it's probably best left to your dealer..

Haynes Manuals

Not a big deal, and too late for SteveRocket, but Haynes are bringing out an updated manual for the Hinkley Bonnie up to '07 to be available in March. I phoned them yesterday and they confirmed that. I don't know if there's been much new on the bikes between '05 and '07, but there we have it! I'm waiting two months, but it's hurting badly.
