Question Tacho rotation possible?

Hello RAT's,
Is it possible to rotate the tach on my T100 90 degrees CCW, thus putting the "red line" at 12 o'clock? I know it may sound pointless but I like the idea of the look. Surely someone here must've tried it? (sorry for calling you Shirley).

Cheers,

I haven't got a triumph tacho. But can you not just rotate it in the bracket, what holds it in place stops it turning in the bracket?

There are detents in the bracket that the
molded tabs in the inside groove of the 4"OD epdm rubber grommets lock into ... if memory serves there may also be a tab on the underside of the rubber grommet that locks into a cut-out in the top of the gauge cup...

The detent & tab arrangement should allow a little side to side rotation but that's all...

Also, the wiring coming out of the indicator housing into the tach goes through an aligned narrow slot in the tach's cup... make sure if you rotate the tach you haven't stretched or stressed that wiring...

Cheers,

D9

That's what I found...

D9,

This is exactly what I found. A bit of side to side play was the olny option. I'm curious to know what smac did to achieve the rotation. It seems to me that the a new slot would have to be made to accomodate the wiring at least. Considering how little time one spends looking at the clocks while at speed, it may not be worth the effort. Then again...it IS a mod...Hmmm.

Cheers,

SK

Not pointless at all - I rotated all the Tachs in my Porsche's to 12 o'clock for the same reason you want to - so you can glance down quickly and see if you are approaching the red line. I also rotated my speedometers as well because I really was not interested in looking at speeds below 70 mph.

SK,

I was thinking the same thing - possibility you'd need to make a new slot.

Ok, so... rotated tach, pointing to say, 7K at 12 o'clock... cool. But, best way to keep it there and looking good...? IMO tach acorn nuts would look a little weird if they were no longer aligning with the speedo acorn nuts. Can't rotate the tach with rotating the attached cup - unless you drilled new holes in the cup to accommodate the repositioned integral mounting studs... and also possibly a new wiring slot.

I think if it were me, I'd first see what the wiring would comfortably allow... also see if the existing wiring slot in the cup is ok with the rotation or does the cup slot have to be relocated?

Probably would file a second grommet detent in the tach port of OEM bracket that would correspond to the tab in the grommet groove - that way the grommet, tach, and cup are clamped into the bracket like they oughta be when it's rotated to the desired position.

If I had to drill new holes in the cup for the tach mounting studs, would probably make some tight little internal plugs for the old holes that would render them virtually invisible when all was said & done...

Not a difficult mod overall and IMO worth pursuing...

Cheers,

D9

How about a pic or 2 of that my man? Did they just free spin like mine did in my cars?
