Help!! Bullet style indicators.

Have attached my Lucas style tail light and it works fine. The trouble I am having is with the artermarket indicators. They have a positive and earth wire coming from them which I have spliced to the origional indicator wires and work fine until I try to mount them to something metal on the bike they then short out. What am I doing wrong???

Earth

Had the same problem w/ the horn!! Gotta insulate them from metal. Arent they just plastic tho w/ 2 wires?? If so grnd should be no problem? Put new ft's on & was a simple hookup. Got to get the wires rite tho. Horn (metal) was a different story!! Turn on the key & solid horn! Used awning bushings- fit rite on. 130 DB now- a good move! Self cancelling sig's was a good one too. Real life savers!!

Undo your splicing and swap the wires over, sounds like, what you think is a negative wire is actually a positive and when you ground the indicator it's shorting straight to earth

it sounds like your wires are crossed, you have your hot leg on the ground wire- it will work fine when you have the light hanging free but when it comes into contact with the bike well you know the rest.
here are some options, use a multi meter -
or use the light you have- disconect both light, make sure your wires are not touching any thing, fing the ground wire on the blinker attach it to the chasis and with the turn indicator on conect to other lead on light- when it lights up you found your hot wire, do same for other side---
if you pick up a multi meter- it will make life easier for you for ever
take your black lead and anchor it on the frame- under a screw set it to V l: (dc) bike on left and right turn > check ea wire for voltage- and mark them l/r no volts is ground.
now place it on OHMS it looks like a horse shoe- and check your bullets by placing your blk lead on screw threads of turn signal, and red on either wire- if you have a tone indicator it will beep on ground . if doesnt beep it should give a reading when it completes the circuit and nothing when open.
be sure to take out the bulbs

field piece makes a cheap multi meter-
good luck

I agree: Swap the wires, the light bulbs won't care.

Man, I feel your pain. I've been on night shift for 4 years now and it's a slow painful death.
