NH Togas-Will they wake the dead? (or almost dead)
I work at a hospital and leave in the wee hours of the night at times.
I love the sound of the Togas (at least as per youtube postings), but I've never heard them in person. They seem the closest to old british bikes.
Having searched +++ on the forums, and knowing they are a 7 or 8 out of 10 on the loudness scale, I wonder if I can slink away at 0200 without feeling that I may be undoing any good work I might have done with the sick and injured.
I don't know anybody who owns Togas in my area, the local dealer's
"triumph mechanic" wasn't familiar with Togas, but would be willing to install them.
Any advice from knowledgeable Togas owners?
Should I settle with TORS?

I've never heard togas in person neither, but had a set of Sprint which was rated 7-8 of 10 loudness scale.
I always thought togas were a bit quitter than Sprint / EMGO based on that I read here, but if togas are truly 7-8 out of 10, I'm afraid they are too loud for your situation. I had to replace my Sprints with TORs because the sound was too loud and I was too afraid of making my neighbors angry. I live right in the middle of apartments buildings and condo complex and my bonnie is parked in a garage building.
I assume your situation coming in and out from the hospital you work at would be somewhat similar to my situation. I would NEVER be able to sneak in or out at 2 AM with 7-8 rated pipes.
If you think my living environment above is close to your hospital environment, you will wake the dead, or KILL the almost-dead.
TORs are great for me. I sometime wish they were a bit louder, but oh well...

I've had the TOGAs on my bonnie since last summer. That was an uprade from the TORs. I also had a concern about waking the neighbours at stupid-early hours that my work sometimes demands. I must admit that I try and idle away as quite as possible and so far, no complaints. If you open the throttle hard, you will get a good bark from these mufflers; so the dead may be disturbed.
The TOGAs come with 'mutes' that can be installed to bring the volume down a notch. I would estimate that the TOGAs with mutes are equivalent to my TOR silencers. Bear in mind tough that TORs are known to get progressively louder with use. As I have only had the TOGAs for a season, I've noticed no increase in volume.
Install is a piece of cake - anyone can do it.
If the weather gets any warmer, I'll drive out your way so can have a listen.
I am very happy with the TOGAs.

I heard some Toga`s on New Years day,and quite frankly, they had the deepest, mellowest tone of Bonnie music I`ve ever heard.Even revved up,they were just audible over the din of surrounding traffic.I wouldn`t fear riding it to the hospital or to ANYWHERE else with a set on my bike.

Had NH Togas on my bonnie for about 18000 miles now, and IMHO, they are pretty tame at lower rpms. So, I believe I can ride anywhere without offending anyone. I still believe they are the closest in sound to the 60's Brit bikes.
Steve, you outta hear em inside a building on a dyno at 8100 rpm. There were people parking on the street to come in and see what was making that music.

The Togas on my 07 T100 sound close to the Burgess mufflers on my 60's bikes - I know, I ride all of them regularly. Go listen to an old Trumpet; the Togas are very similar in tone and volume.

I recently inserted the mutes in the NH togas that I had the dealer install when I bought my T100 last spring. I didn't do it because I was concerned about my neighbors in the AM hours. I did it because, after an hour or so, the bass drum rumble inside my new Shoei helmet (that replaced an old Arai Quantum F) got on my nerves, even wearing properly inserted ear plugs and stuffing the ear area of the helmet with felt to dampen the sound.
The mutes have toned down the bass sound a bit on the short rides that I've been able to take given the winter temps. They still sound very good - much better than the TOR pipes. I may experiment in the spring with another helmet and run the togas without the mutes. They unmuted togas do draw the attention of cell phone-distracted car drivers, as well as most other bikers, regardless of their make or style bike.
(I should note that when I first tried to insert the mutes, they wouldn't fit. The rear flange section of the mute was too wide. Some emails to Norman resulted in his mailing another set of mutes that also didn't fit. He ultimately wrote that my togas must have been made from a heavier guage metal. He then custom made a pair of mutes for me, on his dime for the labor, material and overseas postage. I was very impressed with his attention to my problem and his follow through. Hard to find these days.)

I got Togas used without ever having heard any because to me they look the best. I had Staintune "peashooters" (not reverse megaphone) on the bike, with the baffles in place, and the sound was pretty good, and definitely not up into the annoy people level of loudness. I knew the Togas would be too loud from the overview perspective, as much as I'd personally enjoy the sound, so I had an aftermarket baffle that some have been known to use in Harleys cut in half and the halves used as baffles in the Togas. It was a pig in a poke; I didn't know what I'd get, but they sound very similar to the Staintunes with baffles. Not the perfect sound level and pitch, but good; I think I'd submit the W650's sound as the gold standard (among recently current possibilities, that is; a sixties' 650 is of course the actual standard).

I have a toga'd bonnie, and live in a quiet street of terraced houses amongst neighbours that I like and want to like me. I have no problems with the noise levels.
That said, I don't drive off at four in the morning on my motorcycle! When I leave that early, I try and shut the car door quietly and turn the car radio down too, because we all know how sound travels that early. (Except the drunken youths who walk past at night... they obviously don't.) So any non-stock baffle is a potential problem for you any which way.
