Hello folks,

Hope you've all been having a good time at Christmas.

I was looking at the front axle bollt, and noticed that there seems to be a bit more space than usual between the spacer on the left and the inner side of the fork. Everything seems to be at the correct torque.

I'm hoping you can go take a look at yours, and maybe post a pic of what it looks like? I may be chasing ghosts here, but I wanted to ask anyway.

Also, while we're on the topic of axles:
1) There's not much free thread left on the front, after tightening the nut... is this a worry?
2) Neither front nor rear axle nuts have any sort of safety pin (not sure of the technical term), to ensure that the nut does not come loose, like I've seen in other bikes - any comments about this.
3) There's a plastic tube/end cap thing that goes through the axles. Does this serve any purpose? The right hand (speedo drive) side end cap on the front is broken off.

Pics are standing in front of the bike, and looking towards the back. Sorry the bike ain't all that clean... I took the pics as soon as I got back. About 40000kms now, and doing pretty well... certainly plenty of thanks to all you fine folk here!

1) Front axle - left side close up with the axle pinch bolt: you can see there's a little bit of space (like and intented lip) between the inner edge of the fork and the outer edge of the spacer

Hey I think your axle looks right.
When assembling the wheel to the forks, you get it all lined up and then torque the nut to the correct nm, which sets the preload on the bearings. The axle and bearings are locked to that fork leg. The other fork leg has a pinch bolt to secure the other end.
Does that make sense?
I dunno why there's plastic on the end of the axle but maybe it's so you have something to protect the threads in case you need to smack it?
The axle nut has plastic locking insert if I'm not mistaken which would prevent the need for a cotter pin. Those plastic inserts do wear out after a few uses and do not lock as well.

pump the forks before you tighten the axle nut in lines the wheel up with the caliper
