Float Bowls

Hi guys, I was wondering if you could answer a question that I have.

I had winterized my Thruxton a month or so back. In so doing I opted to fill the gas tank and add fuel stabilzer instead of draining it. I set the fuel switch to the off position and drained the float bowls until there was no more fuel in them. A couple of days ago I checked the carbs and sure enough the bowls were full of fuel again. Is this normal or should I have done something else to prevent the fuel from seeping into bowls?

Thanks.

The petcocks are notorious for slow leaks. You may have to "pinch " the fuel line with some type of clamp to prvent this. If a Float then sticks you could be filling the crankcase with fuel.

John - I did basically the same thing that WhiteStripe did but I turned off the petcock about a 1/4 mile from home and ran the bike to my garage and then let it starve until it shut down. Do you suppose they could be getting dripped into like you said is happening to WhiteStripe? Dam - I just paid like $125 to service my Honda generator which had Green Death in its carb bowls.

It shouldn't be a problem if you used fuel stablizer. If you know there is fuel in the bowls, just go out and start it and let it run out again.

John, I would use a fuel stabilizer if you have not. Make sure the tank is full to prevent rust. For worry free storage pinch the fuel line or disconnect from the carb and clamp a solid "plug" in the end. Or just check the bowls every now and then. It's actually a good idea to run the bike every now and then if possible. Bring it up to full temp to help evaporate condensation in the crankcase, and keep seals from drying out.

Float Bowls

Thanks for the replies. I'll figure out a way to clamp the fuel lines. Great advice guys.

I'm liking the idea of pulling the fuel line and slipping a rubber plug over the output line on the petcock. just in case of any leaks. Thanks for the suggestion. I've never had one leak, but I did sell a small Yamaha to a neighbor several years ago with a leaky petcock that drained lots of fuel thru the carb into the cylinder, where it then made its way into the crankcase.

I currently have my float bowls off because I am waiting for the main jets that come with the NARK Kit.

I clamped it before the Petcock with Forceps.

I drained my float bowls about one month ago. I pulled my float bowls off yesterday and they were full of fuel. My thoughts were a slow leak. I didn't finish the work I was doing yesterday and snugged the float bowls back on the carbs. Pulled them off again tonight and they were full of fuel again. This must be a pretty common problem. Anybody ever check to see if this is covered by warranty?

I pull the tank off for the winter and store it indoors. I also drain the bowls. This year, being 4 years old, I dropped the bowls off for an inspection. They were like new. I am not a big fan of stabil in gas, but it may not be too bad with these carbs. They are easy to tinker with. My advise for a small winter project:http://www.newbonneville.com/html/carb_screw_kit.html
