Question Valve cover gasket

I am looking at checking my Valves (Have just over 11000 Miles on her) and am not seeing anywhere that says to use Gasket sealer on the rubber Valve cover gasket. Do you just put the gasket back on and tighten the valve cover bolts and that is it? You do not use any sealer?

Thanks,

Theoretically, if the gasket is dry and clean, and all mating surfaces are also, the gasket should be fine. In practice, it seems about half the folks have a bit of a leak from the cam cover and half dont.
If RTV or silicone sealer is used, go sparingly, you dont want to get any excess inside the cover.
I use 3M gasket/ trim adhesive, AKA gorilla snot, to do this job.
It goes in a very thin bead, seals great.

My valve covers were leaking after 4500 miles and the dealer replaced the gasket under warranty. Forgot to ask whether sealer was used or not. Will find out this week when I go and redeem my Christmas gift certificate (I guess I trained that kid of mine right)

I used a little RTV sealant applied sparingly with a toothpick as a method to hold the rubber gasket in place. Just make sure the "U" sealing channel in the valve cover is spotlessly clean.

Trying to install the gasket without something to hold it in place I found very frustrating.

This worked like a charm. As MANY others have posted (I will do the same) DO NOT OVER TORQUE the four valve cover bolts. Use a torque wrench.
