High Rise Bars on a Bonnie?

I raised this question in the Twins Hang-out forum and it disappeared so fast without a response, I couldn't figure out if I'm the only interested party or the tread suffered from "Sunday night syndrome." I thought maybe I should have posted in Bonnie Owners.

Anyhow, has anyone seen or used high-rise bars on a standard Hinkley Bonneville? Bellacorse offers Highlander bars with pictures on a Bonnie cruiser, but the description says they work with standard Bonnies with longer cables.

I rode a 70 Bonneville last summer and the stock bars almost felt like mini-ape hangers, so higher bars might just look right. Could be a cool alternative to low cafe' bars.

(moderators, I checked rules to see if duplicating topics was OK. This will be my last try at this subject, promise)

The Bonneville is a classic and should be treated as such. Ape hangers on a Bonneville chopper MIGHT have been cool back in the 1970's, but so were leisure suits, plaid pants, and long collars. BUT THAT IS JUST NOT COOL TODAY!

Reason you probably received no response the first time was after reading your request most of the group had to lie down and recoup for a while.

Hope you don't mind a little tongue in cheek humor, but please don't do that to your bike.

I like apes...even 12" or 10's. They have their place under the correct circumstances. Definately help's to give you a feeling of being more "in" the bike rather than on top of it.

You want high bars...mount'em up. To hell with the nay sayers.

That's because the bikes destined for the U.S. market were equipped with "bucko bars", emulating the then-trendy chopper look (who says history doesn't repeat itself?). In retrospect, this is seen as a mistake, like the aforementioned polyester leisure suits and platform heels on men's shoes. People who restore bikes from that era typically re-fit the bikes with the European-spec bars and discard the U.S. bars.

Looks and taste are often subjective. Swanson sells a billion dollars' worth of TV dinners in a year- doesn't mean it's passable as food... ;^P

So maybe someone can clue me in here. I mean, clubmans or superbike bars work to improve handling by transferring weight to the front wheel. And maybe they improve performance by marginally reducing frontal area. The rider benefits by leaning into the wind, rather than having to struggle to keep his place in a mechanically-induced hurricane.

So what's the benefit, or point or whatever, of ape hangers?

Yes, I'm mostly just giving you a bad time...

I dont think it would look bad as long as you mod out the rest of the bike to go towards that theme. Only thing that can to my mind is that you will need new cables.
And I LIKE plaid pants and long collars! The ladies dig me!

Hey dude, if you want ape hangers, then get some. Life is a choice, unless you live in Iraq.

My 71 and my 76 Bonnie's both had high bars and when I first got my new
bonnie I was very disappointed with the low bars.
I for one don't like leaning over my bike and I don't care for how they look.
I put some risers on to help lift them to were they feel a lot better then
the low stock bars. I'm used to them now.
There are a few guys on here that have put some high bars on there
new Bonnies. I think they look pretty cool.
It would be a lot more work to put them on because you would have
to get longer cables and wires but hey if that's what you want I say go for it.
Long rides would suck with low bars.
Bill

NOS- Been to Watertown many times. I have no doubt that these articles of clothing are just now making their way into that frozen tundra of fashion. Get down w/ your bad self.
