Can't sync me Carbs

I need to sync the carbs but not having much luck. I had to dispose of the mercury while moving and have tried engin oil and ATF and they just get sucked up and can't get a reading. Is there anything that I can use to give a good reading without having to buy mercury. I don't even know where I could buy mercury from.

Exclamation Here you go Bro

Itcha,

Call or e mail Larry Snyder at Motion pro. He was incredibly helpful to me as I'm sure he will be to you. The mercury carb sync tools are now distributed by another company. The name slips my mind at present. Larry will be able to direct I'm sure. Here's his contact info:

If you are using ATF or oil, make sure you have a good couple of feet before the carbs of extra tubing. Also let it hang overnight to let all the oil that was in the side to get it into the tube settle to the mid point and none will get into the carbs. I have this setup, and never had an issue. Only thing is go slow and very minor turns at a time with giving a second to stabilize. Also make sure to do not leave the screwdriver on the adjuster screw, as it will give a false reading. Make small turn then pull tool and wait a second to see where you are at.

Righto, I think the tubing I have must be to short then, I'll try again with longer tubes, thanks.

Kramrocker,

Thanks also, if all else fails I will give Motion Pro a call but I am trying to avoid the mercury if possible.

I made mine with a 20 ft. piece of tubing. It works well.

As geolpilot said, you could make an inexpensive manometer and sync them. This approach has been disputed here, but for one reason or another, it seemed to work for lots of airhead BMW riders. It's worked for me on the W650, T100, and the old GS.

if you're interested, and don't know how to make one of these things, drop me a line and I'll send you the info.

I bought the electronic (no mercury) carb balancer from Aerostich. It was expensive (US$100) and I haven't used it yet, but other users report good results with it. I'll post my results in the spring when I try it.

Sync with vacuum gauge

I may be called a wanker for asking this question, but here goes. Can a pair of automotive vacuum gauges be used to sync the carbs or are they too crude??

Yep thats all the $70 pair I bought are with a couple of fishtank bubbler valves to stop the needles bouncing.Oh they also come mounted in a nice bracket that hangs over the bars.
