16 tooth spocket

Hi All,
I am the new owner of a 2006 Bonneville T100. It was a wrecked bike that I picked up reasonable. It had a bent front wheel that I had repaired localy. Needs a new tank, brake lever, etc etc.. So far I have been able to get everything I i need either from New bonnie or ebay and this site has been very helpfull. The bike came with the 18T sprocket. I am looking to use this bike to buzz around town. I purchased a 17T and a 16T from new bonne.
Is anyone using the 16T sprocket? I am curious what kind of revs you would turn@ 60 MPH in case I ever wanted to use the interstate. I was thing of maybe making it into a scrambler with the low gear ratio.
The picture is of the bike the day I bought it with no work done. I will be sure to post the "After" picture when she is done.

At 60 MPH she should be running about 4000 RPM with the 16T
at 60 MPH with the stock 18T she should be about 3600 RPM
That's assuming you are still using the stock 43T rear sprocket.

At 75 MPH she will be revving pretty good 5040 RPM.
I bet you will be able to pop the front end up pretty easy in 1st.
with the 16T.
Me I like the highway cruising I'm running the 19T and at
60 MPH I'm revving about 3250

16 tooth

Sounds like fun to me!!! I got 17- nice & sprinty. The 16 should be more fun!! These bikes like to rev- espec if its a 790 w/ I think it is? Itll do the hwy just fine w/ no worry to down shift on a pass!! Lay off the wheelies tho- tjhey are costly tire & chain wise!!! I still get a fun little one on the 2nd gear change once in a while!!

I will search for it, but I thought that I heard that the bend of a 16t sprocket wasn't to good for the chain. And that you should replace the rear if wanting lower gearing. Not sure where I heard it, but I thought on this thread.

Edit: well I thought it was here but I cannot find anything so, please disregard...

Hi, Skool - I see where you might be concerned about the tighter bend with the 16t sprocket. This may make you less concerned in case you ever want to do it. My W650 (sold this year) came stock with 15/39 sprockets. My first chain made it to 18K miles .... I goofed it up running it too tight and not lubing it (upon the advice of another rider). A few O rings frazzled and the chain was toast. Took good care of second chain and ran it to 20K and it was still ok, but changed it at the beginning of a riding season instead of later. The 3rd had run 14k miles when sold, and looked very good.

All chains were either O or X ring, 525 size.

I'm running a 44t rear sprocket and a 17t front, which is close (but still taller) than the 16t/43t combo. It is fun for tearing around town. I'm going to try the 18t front to see how it is, it will be a little lower still with my larger rear sprocket than the stock combo.

16T on my 790 was fun aorund town, but ran out of top end so fast it wasn't even funny. Had a hard time getting 100mph out of her. Again, fun around town, but not that much fun. The bike stock went 115.

I'd love to go to 16t for the twisty back roads I spend 90% of my time on. That's definitely a mod in my future. Give it a try and let us know what you think!
