rev limiter
Can anyone explain how triumphs rev limiter works?
Ive heard two versions, one it cuts off the gas at a pre-determined rpm
The other that it is a function of the electrical system.
Anyone know for sure?

I'm fairly certain it's the spark that is cut. Not cut totally but enough to keep the rpm's below the set point that is why it sounds and feels like a spark plug cap fell off. There is no control in the carburetor that would allow the fuel to be cut like that.

Limiter
Its definately the ign! I get a little puff of black smoke out the pipes when I hit it cause it kinda gives it a miss sorta when it does its job, leaving a wisper of unburnt gas for the next revolution to burn. The new EFI bikes may well use the fuel system to do the job??I thought of getting A HIGHER limiter till I saw the picture of the Bonne w/ no limit- bent valves!! It will take 1000 rpms+ w/o any problems tho. I think Ill just leave her the way she is till (if) it needs replacement?

My first K bike (1985 BMW K00RS) was fuel injected and I think it used two cut outs.
1. first warning was a severely retarded spark which made her really bog down
2. second warning was a temporary shut down of the Bosch FI system.

rev limits
Thanks so much, gentlemen, that pretty much agrees with what direction i was thinking was the method....
I hit the limiter a coupla days ago when taking bonnie up in second gear....immediately upshifted to third and have never had it go that far again...
It still perplexes me why triumph didn't put a tach on the bonneville. Every one I have ever owned (6) has had a tach.....seems a pity to have to go either getting a T100 or buying aftermarket to get one.
Anyone have any good ideas on the best way to install a tach and what kind?...
I will look in my xmas stocking to see if triumph has sent me one....hahahaha

Koi - you can buy an OEM tach kit from Triumph. Ck under Bonneville and Instruments.

I think it's a little bit pricy at $325, but I'd guess it would be a 'plug and play'. There's others on this forum who have purchased aftermarket speedos and tachs, and used a custom-machined mount from (I think) D9, a forum member. There should be some photos in some of the fairly recent posts.
