Funny front end noise

Hi,

First time poster, long term lurker. This site helped immeasurably in my somewhat tortured decision to trade a perfectly good VFR for my 2007 Bonnie.

Haven't regretted it yet, though I do miss having breaks.

So anyway, about 1600 miles on the clock and I'm noticing this funny noise.

Front wheel when I'm decelerating - say coming up slowly to a stop sign. At abot 15-10 mph, I start getting a squeak....squeak.....squeak...........sqeuak...... ................squeak........................sque ak sound with the frequency slowing down until full stop.

Not really affected one way or the other by braking - it'll do it with slight brake pressure on or free rolling - though heavy pressure will make it stop.

Happens intermittantly, but more often than not - maybe 80% of the time.

Any thoughts??

Should I be worried?

Suggestions for diagnosing?

Thanks much, this site is an awesome resource.

Dave O. Lucas

Sounds like dirt or oil on your brake pads. Spray some brake cleaner on the whole assembly. Both the pads and caliber and then see what happens.

Since you are under warranty I would have the dealer look at it. Chances are it is nothing to worry about. Mine has done it before and then quit for thousands of miles, only to do it again for a while.

Or, you could pull the pads and see if there is a little piece of grit in there between a pad and the rotor. You might be able to tell that if there is any gouging on the rotor, but a small piece of grit will not gouge noticeably. And do spray the things down with brake cleaner as recommended by Wenzel.

Keep in mind that no rotors are perfectly round and that some calipers don't always retract entirely every time.

Do check your brake fluid level.

Others may have other suggestions of things to check.

Squeak

Sounds like some oil or cosmoline got on the rotor. Give it a good cleanintg & see if it goes away? I had somethinhg similar on the rear. It was chain oil that got on the riotor. Wiped it down w/ solvent & gone. If worse- UNDER WARRANTY!!

Same issue for me - thruxton

I have the same issue 5k on the odo.

Things I have noticed is that if the engine is running real hot, eg I have just fanged it for a bit.. no sound.. but if it cools down a little the sound comes back.

I dont know if its the brakes, cos feathering them near a stop doesnt seem to make a difference.

It almost sound like a valve noise.. but cant be as nothing to do with revs..

Clutch maybe? anyway dealer will take it for a ride on tuesday.. hope they can find something.

Check for disk warping, my front warped and produced a similar noise accompanied by slight pulsing in the break lever which slowly got worse. Mine was under warranty but I decided to upgrade the brakes myself and glad I did.

From what you describe, it sounds simular to my thruxton. Mine happens when slowing down but mine sounds more or a clatter sound. Mine will stop if i hold my hand or Knee tight on the tank, or have a tank bag fitted, i can only asume that there is somthing inside the tank that viberates (maybe the main tank or reserve pipe that are insde the tank). Anyway try holding you hand or knee against the tank to see if it dissapears!!
