Tool

Time to do the valve adjustment and need to make a tool to hold the cam gears in place. What have you used for a cam gear holder and if you made something how did you do it?

Thanks

I own the 'official' Triumph cam gear locking tools and the wrench that permits you to 'rewind' the cam gear spring in the event you need to take the backlash gears apart (or forget to put the locking pin in before unbolting the cam caps; .... don't ask me how I know this).

I placed one of the locking pins on my scanner to represent the actual shape of the tool, then used an electronic mic to measure the critical parts.

There are better drawings available on this site that would make it easier for you to make the pins. You may need to do some searching for them

And here's a comment from several years ago from the Delphi Triumph website:

"The only "special tool" you will need is some sort of way to secure the backlash gear to the cam gear. The cam gear has a 6mm hole, while the backlash gear is a 4mm hole. I would use a ground down allen wrench or something similar to hold the backlash gear from turning while you remove the cams. When I did mine, I used a 4mm diameter bolt with a 6mm bushing fitted over it...worked fine".

Hope this is useful info.

Bob

BornAgain - I think the tool cost somewhere between $40 and $50 US.
Here's a link to the drawing form the Triumph Manual.

With the help of Bob/ohiorider and another drawing I seen on here
I had a friend turn these down for me then I bent them to help
handle then. I have not tried them yet but I feel sure they will work ok.
If the holes are 4mm & 6mm then they will definitely work.

D***! Those look better than the Triumph pieces!

Bob

NOTE - just make sure you put them in BEFORE you begin loosening cam cap bolts, or you'll find out that the wrench that comes with the Triumph pins could be a handy item. I was merrily unscrewing the cam caps, and when I lifted the last cap off, the intake cam jumped up because of spring tension (probably in the antibacklash gear) and came unwound. It was easy to reset it with the wrench and the instructions in the Manual.

I agree - the $40-50 is outrageous. However, the big chunk of metal is the wrench in the line drawing, not the pins themselves. In reality, if this tool was a commodity product, like an oil filter wrench, it would or should cost $4-5 bucks.

Maybe an effort on Triumph's part to discourage us from doing our own work? Well, it won't work!

Hey Bob
Thanks for the info on the pins
They are made from 5/16"Ø stainless steel Bar.
I will be putting them to use in a week or so right now I'm getting
the garage ready before I start to tear into her.
Bill
