Igniter 790 or 865

Just an interesting observation today.

To help track down my electrical problem of my bonnie stalling intermittently, the dealer changed my ignition and lent me an igniter that is for an 865cc bonnie even though mine is a 790. They said it will run a bit rough but should be fine until the new one comes in for the 790.

Riding it today I found that I really had to turn up the idle but it was great then. Maybe it's because I have my bike completely naked again thinking I was going to get rid of it, but the bike is scary-fast to me know. I wish the roads were dry to really push it. So I thought all was well until....

I was in a parking lot doing a U-turn and the bike accelerated like crazy with the throttle barely turned. I tried another and another U-turn with the same results.

So I pull to the side, put it in neutral and barely turn the throttle. It went form slow acceleration to major acceleration in about 2 seconds as the throttle stayed in the same exact position.

Moral of the story: if you ever get a new igniter, be sure it matches your bike's cc.

You accelerated in neutral??? That IS weird.

Not sure what's going on but it has nothing to do with running a 865 ignitor on a 790, trust me.
So keep looking, something else is the reason for this and if you find it you might solve the other problems too.
My guess is that your throttle cable got pinshed under the tank so when turning the handle you are stretching the cable

+1 to Jorgen's reply above, your throttle cable is pinched when turning the bars to near or complete full lock. Check your cable routing...

Oh great. Now I'm heading down to the garage to look at what you mentioned.

I'm getting REAL tired at looking at problems.

Thanks though for your info.

I just looked at it and can't see a thing wrong.

The cable travels to the body (that has the carb balance screw) under the gas tank.

When I slowly turn the throttle (that feels very free), that body pivots at the exact amount I turn the throttle. It stays stopped whenever I stop turning, so that can't be it.

When I put in the 865 igniter, it idled very low even at full choke. As it warmed it still idled low. I had to turn up the idle knob about 5 turns.

Since I'm not riding it again, until I ride it to the dealer when the correct igniter comes in, I'll let them look at what is happening.

Or....I'll just trade it for that new BMW 800 ST. Problem solved!!! Now I can actually ride rather than looking at a 1000 bike problems.

now theres another odd thing....5 turns? If i turn mine even 1/2 turn the idle will go thru the roof. To go from say 1100 to 1300 rpm's it would take maybe 1/8 turn. 5 turns would probably have it idling at redline. sounds like something is wrong, tho i haven't got a clue.

Aha,
So what is happening is that the bike doesn't run right at idle, maybe only on one, (I don't know why but it's not that it is a 865 ignitor) but as soon as you give it some throttle it will fire like it should, with the idle turned up it means it will go from real low to real high (5 turns might be 3-4000rpm). I would say it's a carb problem but it can be ignition. If you could only bring the bike over here I would fix it in no time. The dealers mechanic is doing his best for sure, but he doens't have the experience with strange acting Bonnies as I do..
Did you ever try to unplug the TPS? I had one killing the bike after it got wet, unplugging it made it run fine (you don't need the TPS anyway)

Some other things to check:

Make sure the "spider" in the throttle (it's holding the throttle needle in place) isn't blocking the small hole in the bottom of the throttle.

Air leaks

Damaged throttle diaphragm

Lose jets or jet holders

Needle jet installed upside down

Throttle springs pinched so one throttle isn't moving free

...or just sell it..

Someone pinch me and wake me from this nightmare of never ending problems.

jojje1963, what is a TPS? If it means, Trade the Piece of Sh-t, I highly agree.

You come in loud in clear with the best technical advice of all when you said..

"...or just sell it.."

Kawasaki Versys, here I come!!!
