wiring up a radar detector
Just scored a Whistler motorcycle radar detector as an early b-day gift. It has two bare leads and has me wondering what the cleanest, best way to hook it into the motorcycle wiring is. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, I can't wait to try this thing out.

Any way you can hook a switch up to it and easy access to said switch. Those are 100% illegal in every state in the union and are a mandatory ticket. I fyou have a switch on it and can access it easily you can most likely avoid the ticket. Ifthe thing is small enough you can hide it some place around the speedo or something you would be best to do so.

Or maybe wire it into the switched 12v outlet under the fuel tank. It's fairly easy to get to, and would turn the detector off when you switch off the engine.

radar detectors aren't illegal in every state, they're kosher in Texas.

Gray Area
I think that they might not be illegal in any State to posses - but illegal to use them. That's the gray area.

It's been over a year since I was into the harness. If I recall correctly, there were two plugs, one switched and one unswitched by the ignition switch. On my bike, they were located about midway under the fuel tank, and were taped to the wiring harness. I used the unswitched one to wire in the Triumph 12V outlet (that was simple, since the plugs are made to work together). I used the unswitched for my heated grip kit, and could not find a compatible plug, so I ended up clipping off the plug, and hard-wired the grips with wire nuts.
Here's a line drawing from the Triumph Installation Instructions for the 12V outlet that should point you to approx location of the switched and unswitched outlets.

The use of a radar detector in a passenger vehicle is legal in all states with the exception of Virginia, Washington DC. and on military bases.

Detector
It has on/off switch. Wire it direct w/ a plug so - if necessary, you can pull it off & put it in your pocket! In the bucket, & velcro it on the headlight?? Thinkin one for my Bonne as well?
Easy to connect & will put a quick dx plug to keep someone from stealing it!!
