Adjusting the Pre-load on the rear suspension?

Had the Bonnie for a few months now & thinking of taking the wife for a ride on the back. I want to change the pre-load on the rear suspension to take the extra load (got to be careful when I mention this to the missus) M
Dummy question coming up..... Can someone confirm which way to I turn the ring to increase the pre-load, looking down from the top? I am thinking it needs to be turned so the spring is compressed more I.E. shortened in length

You'll be able to tell by the cam ridges on the adjuster, the notches closest to the bottom are the highest preload.

Correct, turn it so the spring compresses. Use any kind of metal implement that will fit in the hole (if you have the stock suspension). Some people use a hex key, or a Phillips screwdriver, I can't remember what I used.

It will not make much difference.
I have been riding two up most of the time and the stock suspension is lousy, no matter where you set it.

Yes it will make a difference! It'll still be lousy, but at least it won't be bottoming out over every pebble.

Cheers!

That is correct. There is a huge difference between a right or wrong setting. Personally, I set it to two or three when riding solo, and to 4 when riding two up. I weigh 80kg and my girlfriend weighs 55-60kg (my estimate as the truth is Top Secret information).

solo, I run mine on 2 for comfort and 3 for playing
2-up is 4...I've never needed/used 5.

I don't know what all the "suspension sucks" is about.
Evil Knevil jumped on this suspension.
sure, you can modernize ...but you lose the virtue.

Evil thinks Robbie's a punk.

Suspension lousy or wonderful? ..... it's a subjective thing. My subjective opinion is that the stock suspension is exactly that .... stock suspension built to a price point, which doesn't provide the most controlled ride over many of the more twisty but bumpy Ohio secondary roads.

What I've noticed on the forum is that there are two (at least)schools' of thought on improving the Bonnie.

School A - mostly engine performance mods, leaving the suspension stock.
School B - minimal engine performance mods but with upgraded suspension.
Obviously there's those who have done both. And those who have done none.

Bob

Looking down turn clockwise to increase the pre-load.
You're right when you say:
" it needs to turned so the spring is compressed more I.E. shortened in length"

Thanks everyone. Looks like I had got the right idea but I wanted to make sure. I have got stock suspension but I am not planning to upgrade it yet as I want to see how it rides as stock.
