No magnet in drain plug?

Just doing a between-services oil change and noticed my '06 Scrambler doesn't have a magnet in the drain plug. It's just an ordinary bolt.

Is that as it should be? I passed a magnet through the oil and there were no bits of metal stuck to it at all so I guess the filter's doing its job. Still think there should be a magnet though???

New Techonology

Yeah- in this high tech world we live in, some how the magnatic drain plug got lost? In cars too! I dont know of any vehicle that has one today? Maybe the new oil filters are better?? They better be - in bikes especially since the engine shares the oil w/ the transmission!
Keep up w/ O&F changes and all should be ok? I cant remember last when I had a magnetic oil plug? I think my 73 CJ-5?

I got an aftermarket magnetic drain plug. It picks up a few very small particles, not much after a season of riding (3000 miles), which I guess is as it should be.

I still add the magnet

There is so much alloy in the things I don't know if they are still needed, but I always drill the plug and put a magnet in any way, it usually has very little on it. during the oil changes, I like to do this before break in if possible.

Just go to your local auto supply, and get a pack of rare earth magnets for $5. Put a couple of those disks on the drain plug, and you'll have the strongest magnet drain plug anywhere.
Put the other two disks on the bottom of your oil filter where the filings can gather without interrupting the oil flow. Those magnets will not budge at all and work great.

3000 miles

3000 miles per season is more than a lot of people ride, but much less than some! I ride for recreation and occasionally to work. I don't ride below 60F and avoid extremely warm weather as well, because I don't have to prove anything to myself or anyone else. I don't "tour" or go on long trips, just short mostly solo jaunts around central Maryland and occasionally a bit farther.

I rode year-round many years ago when I couldn't afford a car. Been there, done that. It sucks.

Does that answer your question?

Baltonbonneville. I see you're in Baltimore. Spend 4th July there this year with friends. Nice scenery in that part of the world.

Yes, central Maryland is nice, although rapid development is overtaking the lovely countryside. That's quite a compliment from someone in New Zealand!

I was on a boat (not mine, unfortunately) in Annapolis harbor for 4th of july, watching the fireworks.

Thanks!
