Handguards

Hi guys

Quick question. Hand guards....any ideas what will fit the Scrambler without too much modification. I was thinking about the BMW GS type guards, mainly for weather protection, but I am open to suggetsions.

A guy around here was looking at Tiger guards that clamp around the bar. Of course the Tiger has 7/8ths and so they would fit perfect but they looked pretty decent. I looked at some of the motorcross guards and most of them are plastered with logos. I have been thinking about a pair of handle bar mitts. Ugly like sin, but I have heard they are warm and they come off easy.

Try this link to see them:

I know what you mean, thats one reason why the BMW guards are of interest as they are just black, no logos etc.
I could'nt do the bar mitts, even though I ride all year round my hands don't get that cold and they do look awful.
I'm going to the bike show at the NEC at the end of the month to have a look around for ideas. If I get anything I'll stick it on the site.

Thanks

Acerbis

Acerbis make some barkbusters - see here for pix
http://www.triumphrat.net/triumph-tw...project-4.html

You may want to choose a smaller version or cut these down.
But they work well for me and stood up to a 50mph spill.

I had posted on this before, but did not get much in the way of responses. As far as ones I've considered (that are large enough, with some adjustment ability) are: Cycra ProBend aluminum, and Moose Aluminum (large size, not mini).
I don't think Acerbis Rally Pro handguards will work, but it doesn't look as though that is the model Rhodie has anyhow. I have read the Rally Pros required mods on bikes that are less bulky in the handlebar area (KLR650? IIRC) than what I consider the scrambler to be..

Rhodie, what Acerbis model do you have? The outer edge of the aluminum looks like the Cycra ProBends, regarding the way it makes a shallow "U".

Needless to say, this is something I'm determined to find an answer to. Though, unfortunately, barkbusters/handguards of the aluminum variety aren't cheap enough for a trial and error approach!

Apologies for the delay in replying but I have been on the road and missed your post.
To be honest I cannot remember and to find out would require battling for two hours across Bangkok's traffic to find out - calling would not get a definitive response.
If any at all.
They do not provide similar protection that the GS 's do
- most notably the brake reservoir is still exposed & will break off in a serious spill.
But I can tell you that they do work in providing personal protection
even in a 50mph highway slide.
However they do not fit on the Scrambler's bars easily nor perfectly.
But with a lot of fiddling they will fit to some extent.
I am tempted to cut-off the top edge "extension" of the version I have.
Acerbis do have smaller options that would probably be a better choice.
Visually they are rather large.
But I will wait until I get back from my shakedown ride - when/if I finally get a plate,
before making any further alterations.
Best from Bangkok
Rhodie

Hi Rhodie. Sorry to go off-topic for a minute, but I can't let that 50mph highway-slide comment, go by.
You've crashed that beautiful bike? How? Why? When? Who? What's the damage report? Nothing structural I hope. Or injuries, of course.
If it's not too painfull to relive, maybe you'd like to start another thread, telling us about it. So we can share your pain, & offer our condolences.
I hope you're back in the saddle already

No Worries

I have mentioned it en passent in previous posts.
It happened whilst I was running the bike in on the first w/end back in March/April.
Heading home along the main two lane highway, half-way around a sharp steep cambered corner, was a lady on a scooter facing me with the light off [730pm & dark].
She had stopped on the centre line to talk to some friends on the roadside.

As soon as saw her I went low & right [fast lane], she decide to join me and I went down clipping her with left handd Acerbis.
Bike went over on right and we skidded about 5metres.
The scooter meanwhile skiddadled off - sharpish.
I ended up standing in the fast lane using the light of my mobile too warn fast moving traffic of downed beast.
Finally got some of the scooter rider's friends to help move the bike to where it wasn't a hazard.
They had immediately scuttled home and turned the lights off.

Bike's damage made it unrideable.
Broken right foot peg, back brake lever, front brake reservoir, ignition key etc etc.
Oh and 3 broken ribs.
The dinged tank allowed me to attempt to enlarge it -see previous post- but to no great effect.
I am now looking at having one handmade.
However having seen the Scrambler ghostrider -or whatever they are calling it- I am not entirely convinced by the bulbous enlargement.
I may wait until I see it in the flesh, as it were.

But the prang is just part of joys of living in Thailand.
Perhaps I should be grateful that the scooter rider had b'gered off,
as I would have been found liable for her damage.
Thai logic is that the accident wouldn't have happened if I had not been in Thailand.
