clutch lever freeplay

I have what may be deemed a silly question about clutch lever freeplay adjustment, but here goes. Should the freeplay be set until you feel resistance against the clutch springs (i.e. the clutch actuator lever moves slightly), or should it be set until you see the clutch actuator lever (on the clutch plate cover) move? If I set it the way it was when I picked the bike up, the freeplay 'zone' will still move the clutch acutator lever slightly, but with no real resistance until the freeplay 'zone' is exceeded, then the clutch spring tension can be felt. Is this correct?

Dave.

Adjust the clutch to how you like it to engage best, a general rule for me is at least 2mm free play at the lever, but there is quite a range which I find acceptable. You dont want the cable too tight or you will get clutch slip, or not too slack or you will get clutch drag [creeping]. Trial and error of adjustment is the best way,

there should be a 3-4 mm gap of free play at the clutch handle, before it actuates the clutch. I use a handy american coin (nickle) which you may or may not have an equivalent to, to set the gap.
From your description, I think you might want a touch more free play. there should be a little travel of the handle which does nothing, or the clutch will be too tight when everything heats up.

When you say '...before it actuates the clutch...', do you mean before the clutch actuation lever actually moves, or before the cluthc spring tension is felt?

Thanks,
Dave.

I guess it would be tension felt, as I never look at the arm, I just feel it thru the handle

Thanks, Geoff. I figured this might be the answer.

Clutch

Yeah a nickle free play works best. When you ride - the cable stretches so the nickle gap works good!!
