If you ride fast enough rust can't settle.

That may be true, though I'd like to see some research on exactly how fast you need to be going, for rust not to settle. But then we face the problem of rust never sleeping (according to Neil Young) while we riders have to.
Which reminds me of an old taunt I used to cop regularly when I owned an Alfa Romeo, which ran along the lines of; "When you're lying in bed at night. If you listen real carefully. Can you hear your car rusting?" The trouble with the Alfa was; I could!

Unavoidable

Hi,

I am adding to this thread kind of late. I live in the SF Bay Area and my bike lives under a cover. Even with that my Bonnie has been ravaged by rust. Anything that can rust has. The worst part is that regular bolts have been completely compromised. One of the screws on my front brake resevoir was so bad that when I went to unscrew it the head actually shattered. I now have to take the bike to the dealer to get the screw removed and the resevoir replaced.

I love my Bonnie but with the exception of powder coating every part of the bike I am at a loss. I live in the city and don't even have access to a hose to spray the bike down. The only thing I can think of is paying a detailer to come out periodically and give it a thorough cleaning.

Is my situation hopeless? Is it just impossible to own a Bonnie near the water without a garage?

I am going to make one more run at the rust with every brush and cleaner I have been able to get my hands on but it just seems hopeless. What I think aggrivates me is that my friends Daytona sits right next to my bike on the street (both under covers) and his just shrugs off the same elements that kick the crap out of the Bonnie.

Hey amuro

Trust me, spray boeshield (not wd-40) on your bike parts (preferably without rust). It has been tested in salt spray booths with great results.

Boeshield

Hmm, I will give that a try. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the rust that is on it off? Some parts I know I just need to replace and other I know I need to have powder coated.

I have looked on Craiglist and there are several guys in the city that offer on site detailing. Most of their pics are of choppers but a bike is a bike. Any one had any experience with these kinds of services?

yeah

I'm pretty sure the acf-50 is in the same class as boeshield.. use whichever is easier to get.

To remove rust, you have to use any of those corrosive rust removal products like naval jelly. Unfortunately, the steel will be bare steel when done and will want to rust very quickly... so apply the above products soon. I would try to replace the cheaper bolts if possible.

Rust

I have not seen any, I mean any part on a Bonnie that did not rust if not taken care of. Depending on where you live, I live in Florida where slt spray attacks 24 7.
