S/H Bonnies - good buy or not?
Hi, first post.
Am a 855 SpeedTriple owner, but after a few loan rides fancy sitting a (Hinkley) Bonnie next to the ST in the garage, for easier lazier rides out with the lady.
With buying S/H bonnies are there any main things to watch out for?
Is 12,000 or miles an issue for them or is it more age and how well kept?
Any tips on buying S/H bonnies with high mileage?
Thanks in advance.

if its well taken care of, 12000 is not a lot. on the other hand, unless its real cheap, I see a lot of used low miles bonnies for sale too. I bought an 05, in 06 with 358 miles on it. now it has 16000 with no problems.

12,000 is when the valve clearance inspect/adjust is due.

I am approaching 13,000 in the last 17 months. Not even broken it yet. Just a tire change & 2 chain adjustments. Runs better everyday. No valve adjustment yet. No noise.

As previously stated, 12K miles is no big deal if the bike's been properly cared for. The Bonnie mill is in a fairly mild state of tune, and the design in particularly robust.

My T100 just turned 24,600 today, and I have just replaced the first set of sprockets and chain. Bought used in Dec 2005 with 4100 on the odometer. I did contact the previous owner who, due to health issues, had sold it back to the shop (or had it consigned). He gave the bike a good bill of health .... no wrecks, never dropped, and absolutely no mods ... pretty much like buying a new Bonnie that had been somewhat broken in.
The thing I'd be most cautious about is finding one that, if several mods have already been made, were done by someone with more than minimal experience working on bikes. Find out exactly what has been done to the bike, and who did it.
I'll probably buy another used one in a few years, and I'll be looking for one that's had the least amount of intrusion into its innards, unless they seller convinces me he or she is a good wrench.

Noticed locally that there's not much difference between the price of a new one and one that's maybe five years old. Might just be worth paying the extra?

If there's no real price difference I'd get the new one everytime. However, most places you can pick up a year or 2 old one with nominal milage (300-1500mi) for a few thousand cheaper than new. In that case, i'd save the 2 or 3 grand and get a basically new bike for less money.
