Ok, this is my bet: It will slip at 130hp and the basket will explode at 145hp, with a billet basket, and a lockup clutch, the clutchplates will brakeup at 185hp... I never had a run on my 200+ bike without breaking at least 2 plates, but I really don't know what to do about it

btw, mine is only 1120cc

Sweat, I don't think that the pride I'm feeling is coming from having the first 1200 bonnie, perhaps some of the first to assemble a 1200. The pride I have is more of a feeling of self accomplishment, knowing that "I done this" not someone else. Remember, I dove into this engine head first, hell I had never looked inside a bike engine prior to this, except for pictures. I have worked on plenty of cars, rebuilt engines, I was an aircraft mechanic for 8yrs, so I figured hell, I have a manual, and I have the mechanical ability, so let's do it. My logic is that you have to do something for your first time some day, so why not! So yes, I think I feel more like a proud papa I do think that it is cool to know that this is the first, but I think twisting the throttle is cooler than that.

Jorgen, you are the man when it comes to this engine and if anyone knows the limitations it is you. So...I will make sure I won't go over the 145 threshold, I heed your warnings very seriously. If it doesn't slip with a 50 shot, I will leave it at that. The last thing I want to do is grenade the clutch basket.

Cynr, once I get done with everything I will see if I can get my wife to shoot some action video. She is out of country for the next couple of weeks so it will be a while.

I had the same feeling with my bike engine. I'd be in a topend before but not on a bonnie, and I'd never been in a bottem end and split cases etc, I'd also never blown a motor until the bonnie...I was sick for a month over that.

Once I had the mother rockin and rollin again I was happy as can be. Talk about an emotional roller coaster! I'm glad it's done but I would do it all again in a heartbeat and I have 0 regrets about it, even when I broke it. I wouldn't trade any of the experience for anything.

Sweat, I couldn't have said it better myself, after the first couple of miles I told myself, "alright, you are going to go or blow, let's do it!" I'm glad she chose the option "go"

Big Bonnies

Excellent job Greg, well done. I have managed to pick a spare head up for my 1100 Bonneville, I was going to install larger valves but the expense (£1100) scared me off.
I am going to try some porting and raising the compression ratio.
Power wise, I have also come up against a wall, I had HSR42's fitted and tried a pair of 39mm Fcr's for comparision and could hardly tell the difference, going by seat of the pants dyno!!!
I have just moved 12000 miles and not had my bike delivered yet, so cannot try any more changes, the larger diameter header pipes sounds a good option. We have a specialist pipe maker in town, I think that will be my next step.
Looking forward to how things develope with your bike- Again Well done man!!!

Phil, glad to hear from you, it has been a while. Yes, I think that the pipes are the limiting factor right now. Sure, larger vavles will help, but without more space for the extra mixture to flow you are still at a wall.

The porting yourself is not hard. It can be labor intensive if you are anal, such as myself, but not hard. Get a motorcycle porting kit from standard abrasives, I got mine from summit racing for $31, and just remove the casting flash. I took alot of effort not to change the shape of the roof of the port, just clean it up. Once you get in the port, and think like airflow, it will come to you.

Let me know how the pipes turn out, it will be a while before I start something on mine.
