Pilot Screws....2.5 or 3 turns out?

My bike wouldn't idle without the choke, so I took the carbs apart looking for gunk in the jets. Everything is clean. I found that one of my float bowls is off a few mm. and both pilot screws are turned out 2 turns exactly. Here's the question: the Jenks guide suggests 2.5 turns out for a stock bike but the Dinqua guide suggests 3 turns out. Is there a concensus on this and could this have been the cause of my idling problem?

Thanks, Mike

If your bike is stock it may run fine at 2.5 turns out on the pilot screws, if not try 2.75 and then 3 turns out. When you get it to idle smoothly, start easily with good low speed throttle response just stop there. Technically you should turn each pilot screw in till the bike starts idling rough then back it out till it smooths out and then give it another quarter turn. Unfortunately this method of adjusting idle or pilot screws is a lot more difficult on a bike than it is on a car with carbs. My bike is at 3.5 turns out on the pilot screws but I've got N.H. Toga (Classic) mufflers/silencers.

A little more needed

At first glance I wanted to say, "yeah just up you pilots to 42, and possible turn screws out til it feels right." But then you said that you took apart the carbs looking for gunk, and that leads me to believe that maybe you didn't change anything on the bike which means one of two things... A) some else is not working correctly or B) you did change something else for the jetting to be off. If it is the B, then yes adjust the pilot. But if you did not change anything out, you might be looking in the wrong place.

Tis is one of those "it's too obvious, but i just gotta ask" questions. I assume you know about the idle adjustment knob, right? just wanna be sure.

Mike, each motorcycle is different, some bikes run rich and some run lean. Just because one person has the same mods as you, doesn't mean that the jetting or settings will always be the same. No one bike is equal, so you should set you pilot screw to the setting it needs, not what the jenks guide or anyone else tells you. What does your bike say?
