Start out riding with choke half open
Can I start riding while the bike still warming up. I mean the choke out half open. It seems like this bike takes for ever to warm up. Lots of farting and it backfires when i start it. I had the dealer install TORS and there jet kit. Maybe the guy didn't do a very good job. If this matters I came from a fuel injection.

they ARE cold blooded. You can take off with the choke out, yes. I always do and end up pushing it back in within a mile. Not only will coming from EFI make it seem strange, but they may also be more cold blooded than many other carb bikes. I live in a very warm climate and i have slight issues starting cold, so if u are in a cold state it will be a lot worse even.

My 04 Bonni and 07 America are both very cold blooded. Half choke for 5 miles and easy on the motor for that time is an everyday thing for me. It's nornal.

Yep, it's a cold-blooded animal that likes to be half-choked until warm, even in summer.

choke
When my america sittes up a coupl weeks it's really cold hearted(got another bike I enjoy ride to, a road glide). The Harley people well tell you to let it run at least 5 min. to warm it up to keep it from haveing oil seeps(leake's). I've found that true with the cold hearted America.Rudy

I dont know what half the dealers are talking about. its not ok to leave air cooled engines idle for 5 minutes. it is ok to ride with some choke on, till it does warm up

I too was astounded that my new America was such a cold bike, I don't like to leave the bike sitting idleing for a period of time, just pull on the choke, start the motor and ride for about 5 mins with the choke 1/4 on then close - that will depend on your climate though

I live in the same area as Daz, and have a bone stock '04 Speedmaster.

I open up the choke to start up, and by the time I back out of my garage and hit the street, it's just about time to close it up. I usually push the choke in at the end of my street, right before I hit the open road. That's maybe :30 to a minute.

Maybe it's just LA, but once the engine is running, it goes just fine on its own.

As for the air cooling issue, the dealer I bought my bike from gave me one stern warning before I rode off into the sunset. He repeatedly and pointedly told me about letting an air-cooled bike sit at idle for too long. A month later, I ran into him at a group ride and as we sat there chatting in the parking lot waiting to take off, less than a minute went by before he reached over and shut my bike off. He said "I was serious about not letting the bike idle while you get into conversations or sit still. These bikes will lock up if you let them sit too long."

FWIW, I like my dealer (Matt @ South Bay Triumph) and trust his mechanical expertise on the topic.
