Hard to start after the mod's
Hello fellow Brit bike lovers!
Over the weekend I removed the AI, removed the EVLS (And about 235 feet of vacuum line), removed the airbox, added the NARK, added the D&D's and re-jetted (42 pilots, 140 mains and after a bit of trial and error 2 turns out). She rides beautifully and I love the way she sounds. The thing is that now it's bit hard to start the bike. Nothing horrible...just a bit tough to start. I open the petcock, pull the choke out and hit the button...once...maybe twice. She runs for a second or two and dies. I restart..she runs a bit longer...and dies. Finally at around the third try she starts to warm up and rev higher as usual. Any ideas why? By the way in removing the airbox there is an electronic temperature sensor that I sort of zip tied and left hanging. A possible culprit?
I'd also like clarification on what is meant by "popping on deceleration". Is this the sound of a typical back-fire that is being referenced? I am not getting any kind of back-fire but it certainly sounds different with the D&D's on revving up or down. I just want to make sure I got it right. A thousand thanks to all in advance.
Cheers,
SK

sounds like your pilot mixture might need to be a little richer..

I agree, idle mixture sounds lean. Try another 1/2 turn out.
Popping on decel is backfiring, it's loud and annoying. Pow, pow-pow-pow rather than rummmbumbumbum.

I'm certainly open to suggestion but...
It's funny...I started at three turns out and had the same trouble...
At this point, it's kind of a "work around" but I'd love to have that immediate single touch of the button start ability back...I was told to keep adjusting the "D" screw back in until I got popping on de-celeration and then back off a 1/4 turn. Any thought on that "final adjustment?" I may not have gone back the other way as I don't think I ever actually ever heard back fire...could it be too rich?
Cheers,
SK

Kram, you could be a little lean but I doubt it. You can back out the air screws some more and see if that helps. I doubt it will.
(if your not sure then pull the plugs after a good ride. White is too lean, tan is good, black is too rich)
It has been cold in the mornings lately and Bonnies are cold blooded by nature. Mine (and just about everybody elses) just started doing the same thing with the change in temps.
Turn the idle up slightly. Maybe 1000/1100.
Go through your normal start up, turn the key on and wait a full minute then fire her up.
Unrelated id you sync the carbs like I suggested? It will really smooth out the ride.

Sync the carbs?
MES,
I didn't sync the carbs (Bad Kramocker!). How do I go about that Sir?
BTW I will pull the plugs after the next ride to check the color.
Cheers,

got to laugh because I was in the middle of posting a reply about manometers when Kramocker called. Then I canceled the post because we covered it all over the phone and I come back and you had posted a pict of the little beastie.

Nothing a bit of fine fettling won't fix...
Well after an hour long convo with my new buddy MES, she now cranks right up. I simply turned out the "D's" to about 3&1/2. Thanks to GeoDiablo for the pic of the manometer. My talk with MES really got me thinking about getting the perfect carb set up. IT seems that you can tell a lot by the condition of your plugs...plug chopping I think he said. I obviously need to balance the carbs as well. A bit of patience and some good note taking and I'll get her where she needs to be I'm sure.
Happy motoring to all and to all a good night.
Cheers,
SK
