Idiot of The Year Award
Well after 37 years of riding without mishap, today I acheived legendary status at our local shopping center. My moment of instant fame came about whilst parking my T100 Bonnie (4 weeks old). At the time I was somewhat deep in thought, considerig the purchases that I was about to make, and my eyes transfixed on the store entrance.
I casually laid my Bonnie over, sadly though during my deliberations I lacked the forsight to engage the side stand. Thus my Bonnie and I, every so gently greeted the bitumen. Fortunately my left leg was firmly pinned underneath my Bonnie, perhaps maybe even minimising some damge to the bike I thought. Fortunately several shoppers came to the rescue and seperated my Bonnie and I. I dusted myself off, thanked my rescuers, mounted my Bonnie and made a hasty retreat home. Upon inspection my Bonnie sustained two minor scratches to the left muffler and mirror. The clutch lever then fell off in my hand.
Well my little effort is going to cost about $160 for the clutch lever and housing (non genuine of course). As for the scratches, minor as they are, they will serve as a salient reminder as to my ineptitude. However I feell the need for bucket loads of humilation. So please feel free to idulge yourselves at my expense. Unless of course, you are also a candidate for the above award, in which case, "what idiot things have you done???"

Don't worry about it man, I'll take a parking lot spill over a road spill any day of the week.

dataduck,
Welcome to the human race. I'll say this, I can't think of any better way to handle the situation as you handled it. You're not making sorry excuses, you're honestly just admitting a mistake. Sure wish people were more like you.
Although I seem to have the kickstand action correct so far since I ALWAYS look at it to be sure it is down before leaning on it, every once in a while I give it gas to ride off only to realize I'm still in neutral.
You're a fine example of a person with a great attitude to me. Sorry, I won't vote you in for Idiot of the Year Award.

Dataduck,
Don't get down on yourself too much. As they say, that's why they put erasers on pencils. Glad your damage was minimal, and hopefully your leg is okay.
Also, thanks a lot for sharing, so this might prevent one of us from forgetting to put the kickstand down, and to encourage us all to "not put ourselves down" beyond a normal and humbling experience.
Jack

pst, don't tell anyone but I did the same thing in the garage once, but I was quick enough to bounce right back up w/ no damage to the bike, and after a quick glance over my shoulder realized not a soul had witnessed it so my bike and pride remained intact.

One of those things you should only do once. The humiliation helps make the memory stick. On older bikes there was no side stand switch. Riding off with the side stand down would lead into an exciting pogo stick maneuver with the first left turn. I only did it once. Ouch! Hard to forget,...you know with the repair bill and humiliation. (Many years ago)

yeah when I first got my scrambler, I did almost the same thing in the garage; tried to use the front brake at a low speed when I was turning, and the front wheel rolled over an extension cord at the same time. triple whammy! before I knew what was going on, the handlebars went all the way to the steering stop and down I went. busted the shift lever pin; my wife was pissed! She said something like "you've only had it for a week and already you have to put money into it!" 'course it was only $20 to get the new pin and to get the old bolt extracted, but you know...
anyway, if you're used to something with drum front brakes, switching to disc can be a wakeup call under certain circumstances. word to the wise (and the less so).

Mine is even better
I pulled what is now known to my friends as a "Footloose".
My dumbass was wearing my converse low tops. Well they have really long laces, of course I did not tie them up good. So after coming to a stop, I proceeded to put my left foot down to the ground to hold me up. Well my freaking lace was caught around the shifter, so as my buddy watched me and my bonnie fell over is slow motion. Luckily there was only one scratch on the muffler, which has been replaced by better ones.
This is so funny, since in the movie "Footloose", Kevin Bacon and the tractor chicken game, if you've seen it you know what I mean. I still get crap for this all the time.....
