Advice on 2004 Thruxton purchase
Hello! I am not new to bikes by any stretch but have never really considered a triumph until a recent trade came up in a conversation. Through a friend of a friend i was able to find an '04 thruxton with 13k miles and a few upgrades for only $4200. Looks like there was some jetting, stay in tune exhaust pipes?, air injector kit, and a few factory plastic bits.
From all the usual sources i see that this is a really fair price. Anything i should be paying particular attention to? I have turned many a wrench on Japanese bikes , but most of those were made in the 70's (yamaha xs650's). Was '04 a good year on these, has much changed vs. the '07's?
Thanks in advance for any input that you might have, hopefully this is a good thing and I could join this forum as a rider as well.

Welcome ignition. Since you're asking for advice concerning the Thruxton, you should try posting over on the Club Cafe forum where Thruxton riders hang out.
I own an '04 Thruxton and absolutely love it. I've got 8k miles on mine and have had not one problem. There are no changes between the 04's and 07's, other than a solid stripe on the new bikes. Sounds like the pipes on the bike your looking at are Staintunes. They're high quality stainless steel pipes that are built in Austrailia. I had a set on my bike, but I prefer more sound, so I put on a set of Predators. $4200 is a great deal. I say, go for it!

That is a good deal on the price. I think the staintunes are $700 and if you dont like them, they're be more than a couple on here who would buy them from you. Just about any exhaust with need a rejet. The bikes, like all the modern classics, are rock solid. nothing really to worry about except at 13k miles, it might need a valve adj - and that's nothing big. BTW - the header pipes will be blue ... that's normal.

i wasn't sure exactly which forum to post this one on, so if it needs to get moved i'm fine with that. I kind of thought that the cafe forum you mentioned was for older bikes.
its good to hear there aren't any real differences between the 04 and 07's, i thought that was the reason it was so cheap.
so no major glitches or bugs need to be checked for with this bike, just the usual buyer beware? i can handle that. we'll see what thursday brings!

Ignition,
Good luck and enjoy the new ride come Thursday! But nobody here will be upset if you post on the Bonnie forum. Its always good to have more opinions, and really they are very close to being the same bike.

Clever sig,Greg. Is that a take-off on a Stephen King character?

Check to see if they did the 12,000 service. Mine had all but one valve shim replaced. No big deal, but needed doing. Might check on who did the exhaust and jet installation, to make sure they are in sync.
With hardly any miles, check the usual items on a bike thats been sitting for a long time. But thats not Thruxton specific. Its a fun ride with a great old style look. Hope the deal works out for you. Sounds like a good find.

As a matter of a fact, yes it is influenced from "The Dark Side". In the book/movie it was "High Toned Son-of-a-Bitch" though.
