Exhaust Q for a pro

what is the % of reduction needed on a given diameter exhaust pipe to achieve enough/proper back preasure on a straight pipe.
reason:
I am planning on a baffle-stein my stockers via band sawing the rear end of pipe just b4 the shoulder, gut it and fit a straight through in it, weld it up, grind her down, and hit it w/ ceramic.
for 07 bonneville-
thanks tt..

What ever you end up with, just make sure to fire it up ,listen to it and ride it BEFORE you spend the time grinding the welds and having them coated. On some of my early sets,I laid down really clean, multi pass beads, ground them, polished them really good and then s@$t canned them because they sounded tinny or raspy or anemic and performed like crap on a cracker. And try to leave the factory packing and mesh in place regardless of what you make.Totally hollow cans ring like a 1970 MotaBeta 100 with an rpm pipe.

Talking

Hey Rodburner,
Any chance you could post a quick list of things you have tried, so the rest of us don't have to "reinvent the wheel."

Making a list would be tough. What works for me might [probably] suck for anybody else at a different altitude or state of tune. The sound that different mufflers or pipes make is very subjective. Some guys rave about running their pipes TT style, yet I found that noise harsh and the loss of bottom end power was something I couldn`t tolerate.Making the pipes bigger and putting in some baffles was just more of the same. I applaud anybody that will try to make something different,as long as it makes them happy.I have been way more than satisfied with the system I run currently, but I still want a mid or high pipe system. And after reading those latest ZARD posts, they have given me the challenge I needed to re-try my earlier experiments because while ALL my previous high systems were somewhat ugly,NOT ONE OF THEM had a weak bottom end. Plus,I have some stock Scrambler cans that are taunting me from the garage.

Rod,
Have you seen the ones on those bikes in the Hangout section, under the Hot Speedys and Bonnies tread. Don't know if those are what you are looking for as a high pip, but if you go and make something like that, pics and a couple of tips would be great. I love the look on those.

Old Skool, yes,I saw those. They look pretty nice too,Kinda "SHARK" like. But I already did that,

but I firmly believe that a good 2into1 system provides the best bang for the buck on a casually ridden bike. The twin pipes, high or low make nice top end or power in the mid to upper rpm ranges, whereas,I don`t normally ring my bike out,so I build mine for torque.

length plays into it too, those 2-2 high pipes are short compared to a snaky-curvy 2-1 with a good collector. I'd like to see a 2-1-2 where it crosses over inside where the airbox used to be and back out each side, or under the tail!

I like rod's 2-1 that he's currently sporting.
