Cool PJ-1 lube and chain went rusty?

I recently cleaned then lubed my chain with PJ-1 Clear lube, the chain looked great, went on vacation for a month and when I got back the chain has a light coating of rust on the chain part that was not covered by the chain guard or the sprocket cover.

Anyone had this kind of thing happen with this product or recommend something else.

This was the first time I had done the chain and bought PJ-1 after reading about it here.

Any tips appreciated.

Thanks

what I Have Been Happy with

I have used the following over the years without corrosion problems, while living in very humid East Tennessee, and very salty NY, and PA.
In my youth we cleaned in kerosene, Have found nothing better only more expensive
For the lube we used clean oil for cars 40wt usually worked well a little messy.
Later when I found out there was chain lube I used belray, good stuff.
For a while I used way oil from the machine shop I worked for messy, but super lube and great chain life!
Chainwax less mess, a little less chain life(could have been a cheaper chain) some slight corrosion. I will still use this stuff when I'm in the dust.
Motul lasts about 400mi, no corrosion, very little mess, do not know about wear yet.
Scottoiler, this is the best set up, loooong chain life, always clean, at least clean where it counts and you only have to fill the res. every 5k or so. Ran one on an old GSX 850.

THE BIG THING IS: keep after the chain put a center stand on the bike or use a pitbull lube the sucker every 300-500mi and clean at every other lube or better yet every lube. (more often around salt, sand, and dust)

I have not used one but the tin coated chains should be good in the corrosion resistance dept.

Sorry for the ramble but the worst chains for rusting I ever had were chrome plated ones! maybe just the most noticeable.

Technique could be the problem too, You do need to get a good coat on there if it gets too heavy run the chain through a soft towel and just wipe off the excess.

And here we go, I don't want to here it , The only serious corrosion problems I ever had was when I relied on wd-40.

Ps I was a machinist and gunsmith for about 20 yrs and I got more refinishing work (because of rusting) from wd-40 users than any other single cause, a tie with storing guns in a tight fitting case(they usually went together!). It is great for its intended purpose(displacing moisture , and cleaning, a lousy penetrant though) and this is where it ends it will promote rust if not followed up by a real lubricant.

THE BEST cleaner and PENETRANT is Aerokroil from Kano Labs. It is safe for all materials (smells odd though). If every body tried this stuff wd-40 would be gone in a week. This too does need to be followed up with a corrosion inhibitor. It does not promote rust but offer little protection in the long term. I do not use it for cleaning chains, it is probably to good a penetrant for that job it would get in there and work on the grease in the rollers. Buy a can of Aerokroil and hit every nut and bolt you take apart, you will never believe how easy life can be.

Doesn't sound like much of a problem. Probably caused by not having enough lube on the chain when you let it sit. Next time you know you aren't going to ride it for a long time, lube it before leaving it.

For now, wipe it down good with some kerosene, run it 20 miles and spray it down good with your lube. Lightly wipe the excess off and let it sit until the chain is cool before riding. You haven't hurt anything. On a trip if you ride in the rain all day by the next morning there may be a light coat of rust. Rust happens. Just lube it and forget it.

BTW: if you are tired of trying exotic lubes just get some Pro Honda Chain Lube and follow the instructions. Nothing exotic, nothing expensive, it just works.

Thanks for the replies, I think I just wiped of too much of the lube last time I did it. The instructions say to wipe of the excess, I wiped too much off.

Thanks,

Rob
