Hi, probably a silly question but..
Hi, I stumbled on this site a few days back and have been busy reading the threads with interest. I have been riding bikes on and off for over 20 years, but this is the first Triumph I have owned, (Thruxton), love the bike, hate the rather poor finish, but there you go. As a relative newcomer I have done the obvious mods AI and snorkle removed, I would like to fit louder pipes but as I work until 02:00am I don't think it would be fair to get too loud pipes. It is my understanding that TOR pipes have not been homoganised, (sounds like milk), does this mean the are really loud, or just a bit louder, put it this way, if you lived next door to me would you put up with me riding home at 02:00am with them? Another thing that is puzzling is it possible to adjust the cam chain? my bike has done about 8,500 miles and is making a bit of a rattling, not tappets as my local main dealer charges £60:00 per hour I have done all of the servicing myself, and any advice on cam chain adjustment would be very welcome.

Sounds like TOR's are what you want if concern for your neighbors and a bit more of a motorcycle sound are your aim. I have heard the TOR's in person and do not think anyone would find them objectionable. There are some sound bytes at NewBonn and this site of various exhaust sounds from various pipes. Sample them, and happy riding to you!

Unhappy with the finish? Compared to HD and Honda...this is a show bike...what are you disatisfied with? As far as the mufflers go TORS are considerably louder then stock but not obnoxious.....I like the sound. However you can run anything you want...when I have to sneak home....I still shut it off 1/2 a block an coast......

I don't know what your talking about the finish? I think it is top notch.
TOR's are not that loud at all but better then stock, stock sucks.
The cam chain is self adjusting you can not adjust it. I hate the sound
of the cam chain I'll take push rods and tappets any day over the winy
sound of the chain.

TORs are one of the more quieter options for exhaust so no worries there. If you want, you can mod your stock pipes to make them comparable to the TORS. Just requires a little drilling. I should have some pix in my album from when I had them. Also been other threads on the subject you can search.
The cam chain has a spring tensioner, so it adjusts automatically. The tensioner unit can fail, though I doubt that would be your problem at 8500 miles and it sounds like by your description only a small amount of noise. Have the valves been checked?

I have TOR's on mine since 1 yr old. They have got louder. The glass pack will disintegrate after time (good thing). They will bark with a burst or howl if WOT is applied to limiter. BUT,... if you want you could blurble up behind a senior and not startle them or wake a sleeping neighbor coming home late at night,.........but what's the fun in that?????
They are a straight through can with a baffle tube inside to quiet things down. They are a good choice to get things flowing better. It will require,....RE-JETTING (I got to say it first) which you will do. And then you can start a thread about jetting!!

Thanks for the advice and video on the exhausts, I like the idea of moding the stock pipes as i have had glass packed pipes before and after a while they get LOUD. When I refer to the finish, the tank and side pannels are great, the varnish on the crankcases and rocker covers has turned white in various patches and flaked off, probably has something to do with the salt they put on the road in winter here. I intend to get a metal polishing kit soon and take all of the varnish off, and keep them polished.

i have noticed the same thing, although in brisbane, australia we don't need to put salt on the roads! a guy i spoke to that was selling a 2001 and my 'uncle-in-law' both had the same problem. they seem to think it was from stone chips. once the lacquer is chipped, oxidisation of the alloy starts giving that white milky colour.
i'm wondering whether that is the reason for the black engine block on the new models? tougher? easier to touch up?
