Seeping oil - sounds like voodoo - but it may help
When I purchased my first Oilhead BMW (R1100RS) in 1995, I had already planned to do the routine maintenance on it just as I had my other older Beemers. The first time I adjusted the valves, and changed oil, I noticed oil seeping from around the valve covers on both sides after I replaced them, and a slight blow-by at the oil filter cap.
I asked the mechanic what I could have done wrong. His response ".... did you wipe the mating surfaces dry of any oil....?". Apparently, the synthetic gasket material wouldn't seat tightly if there was an existing film of oil between the gasket and the metal valve cover and head. I'm thinking to myself "... yeah, right ....". However, I took things apart, wiped them down, reassembled them, and .... no oil seeping.
Now, as a matter of course, I always wipe oil from the T100's cam cover gasket and the mating surface on the head, and have yet to have an oil leak.
I realize this sounds like voodoo, but I've seen it work on the BMW, and have to assume it has helped on the T100.
