valvetrain noise normal?
i have an 05 thruxton, i have had it about 4 months and was bought from the triumph dealer with 5800 miles. they did the"big" service which i am almost certain includes valve adjustment. i notice a slight valve noise that increases frequency with engine rpm......now heres the problem. i noticed the noise about the same time i upgraded to a different full face helmet the bike has about 6200 miles. i could be hearing better. is a slight valve train noise normal about 3k rpm up? I am a bmw car mechanic and our/my m3 has a hell of a valve train noise, because they are shimmed not hydraulic lifters, and that is considered normal. am i paranoid or is this an adjustment problem?

at 5300 miles they almost certainly did NOT adjust the valves, but anything is possible. That's usually done around 12k miles.
And yes, loud top end noise is normal, these are shim over bucket type engines as well.
Enjoy the bike!

It is just the valves doing what they are meant to do...open and close real fast!

What RonD is suggesting is a quick and easy job. I did the same thing when I purchased my T100 used, with 4100 miles on it, just so I'd have a reference point further down the line.
I recently changed several shims, since all of my valves were out of spec (loose) at 21500 miles. The valve train is now quieter, but you still know there's mechanical lifters/tappets in there.

It is normal for the top end of this engine to sound like a bunch of ball bearings being shaken up in a coffee can. Chances are that your new helmet is simply reducing the wind noise and allowing you to hear the valve train clatter better. The time to worry is when it gets quiet. When I put a windshield on my bike it made it much easier to hear the noise and, until I thought about it, I wondered if something was wrong. Ron is right, however, that you should take the time to see that they are in spec.

Find a place where you can ride a bit, (out of city / town) where you can take a short, but safe putt on your Bonnie sans lid. OH NO!.. now I have transgressed the unwritten law. I've got my Kevlar skivvy's and my asbestos suit on. Shyte, I think I can feel the heat already.
You will give a better idea of how your bike sounds.

it is the helmet but i will check anyways
thanks for all of your feedback. i swapped helmets and sure enough the sound is masked. i went ahead and pulled the valve cover anyways. Bonnie/Thruxton repair manuals are on backorder--do any of you have the valve clearance specs handy? thanks again
